I was never a fan of English classes and writing papers. Let me tell you... Professor Berg made this class ENJOYABLE, while at the same time I learned A LOT. We watched a couple documentaries, read some short stories, books, etc. Theres 2 papers but they aren't that bad and he gives good feedback. A few quizzes on readings. Take him!

I took this as a companion course with my internship - meaning, I had to take this along with the internship to get credit. Good guy. Short on time - always busy, which is understandable because he writes books, writes for the Post, and teaches. Just show up, listen to him talk, do what he says, get an A and move on.

Great professor. Easy class if you keep up and actually do some work and not try to write a paper last day. grading criteria is a bit vague, but if you do your work, you can't go wrong. I took 302 in the summer and it wasn't bad, I imagine it would be even easier in a full semester

We had occasional short quizzes on the books we were reading but they were not announced beforehand. Professor Berg is really interesting to talk to and he's funny during lecture. Just all around a nice guy. Pay attention to what he is looking for in an essay and you'll be fine.

Assigns two papers, the first paper is worked on throughout the semester where bits and pieces are done at a time. Finally when near the semester is ending, he expects you to finish one paper, complete a whole other paper plus an additional essay. Says he is there to help with feedback but is last minute with everything. Would not take again.

I've taken 393 and 399, he is wonderful. If you want writing and real-life advice from a successful writer, take his course and go to class. He also always makes time for one on one conferences and if you're worried about your grade just ask him and he will say if you're doing alright or not.

Great professor. He will make you work for a good grade, but his class is very rewarding and useful even beyond your education. He is also very available and will help you revise your work. If you want to get an A, make sure your writing is inline with what he wants to hear/expects.

Professor Berg has a tendency to lecture to the ground. He also likes to talk about himself. It's not a difficult class, but go to the workshop classes. He does require two meetings with him for his nonfiction writing class. He doesn't give grades. I turned in 7 papers and didn't get a single grade until I saw my final grade (B).

I can make this clear. If you are male, do not take his class. He shows way too much preference to women in class and he loves to cast doubt on men's opinions. I will be avoiding his classes from here on.

Berg is so helpful i have no idea why anyone with half a brain would give him a bad review. The key for this class is:1)take notes in class(write down everything he writes on the board, helps a lot during quizzes)and 2)ask him anything you need to know, AFTER class. I've had tons of problems with my writing and he helped me with every single thing.

Berg is really not pretentious or indifferent to others' opinions--he is really a give-and-take kind of professor. It's just that it's all about the one-on-one conferences with him, in which he's really helpful.

Great teacher. Just go to class and complete the work and you should be fine. Offers great advice for resubmitting work. Pretty easy class to get a B in but you will have to work for the A.

He is a great teacher! No text book required.. If you go to first class and want to judge him, you feel like to drop the class because he seems to talk too much on bs but as you know him more, he is the one who just cares about writing and us to get improved in each paper.. Try to talk to him personally and you are going to love him!

He was passionate about the subject, offered me great critiques on my work, and was easy to talk to. He is a little quirky; he goes off on tangents, sometimes stutters over his words, and occasionally stares at the ground when lecturing, but I thought he was a great teacher.

This guy is very insulting. I had him last semester and now a friend is taking him this semester and is dropping out. Honestly, he is a very pretentious person and you see that after hearing him talk about himself so much. Worst of all, he doesn't want to hear anyone's opinion if it differs from his own, he will silence you disrespectfully.

Best English teacher I have ever had. You will learn so much from him about how to write better papers, and conduct better research that no other teachers have really taught before. Let out of class early every time. And no textbooks required for the class!

Berg is the best graduate professor I have had at Mason. If you enjoy writing and want really great writing advice/guidance - take a Berg course. I actually liked the assigned readings too, and I kept the books. He was helpful and honest and he was never unclear about any of the assignments.

I think Scott Berg is a fantastic teacher. I had him for two different courses. He is extremely knowledgeable and there is so much to learn from him. He gives lots of "real-world" advice, and tries to design his assignments so that they coincide with the demands of the workplace environment.
