Comment:
Professor McRae seems intimidating, but is actually very approachable and understanding. She's very eccentric, and is genuinely excited about the material she teaches and in what students have to say. However, the material is tough, and your final grade comprises of only three 5 page essays and participation. Make sure you're up to the task!

She's a great person, really loves discussion. No tests or quizzes for this course. 6 blog posts and peer responses, a presentation and a long paper. Two books you're supposed to read and a couple readings that you can get by with skimming or spark notes. She has interesting topics and is a kind understanding person who is open to many ideas.

On the first day of class she told us she's dropped acid and has suggested we all go drinking together. She's super helpful, but the assignments aren't easy. She's more than willing to help you through problems and cares about her students in general. Great professor. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard though.

I took American Literary Landmarks and Novels and Tales with her, and both times I was blown away. Not only is she incredibly intelligent, but she forces you to think for yourself. She is funny and the class is very relaxed and interesting.

My favorite professor since I've started. The class was fun and topics discussed were in-depth. Very funny and willing and interested to hear what you have to say. Hard finals but easy work throughout the course. I will be taking more of her classes.

Easy grader, but made very bizarre interpretations about certain novels that seemed very aberrational. The final project was evil: 12 page paper on any aspect of the progressive era with regard to our local community (i.e. Fredonia NY.) There was sooooo much to write about (like...ugh...well...nothing, because it's Fredonia

While some assignments can be daunting, Dr. McRae not only allows, but promotes free thought, provided you can support your statements. She is genuinely concerned for her students, and makes an effort to get to know every one on a personal level. Prepare to work, but don't be surprised if you have tons of fun, too.

I took Novels and Tales with her and it would have been a really great class, had someone else taught it. Her opinions are the only ones that matter and she leaves no room for interpretations. She makes everything dry and is usually rude towards anyone with an opinion. If you don't want to end up killing yourself, take it with another professor.

Dr. McRae is AMAZING! If you want an easy teacher or a teacher who won't ask you to think, she is CERTAINLY not your bag. I loved her! She made me work my butt off in both of the upper level classes I took with her, but she made me feel brilliant! She never made me feel stupid or inadequate and she kept me motivated. She's AWESOME!

Make no mistake: You will work in her classes. If you're looking for an easy A, she's not your answer. A lot of comments seem to think that this is a problem - and I suppose for a lazy student, it would be. She's one of the best profs I had. Take her class, deal with the workload, and you'll learn a lot. Otherwise you'll eat an F and deserve it.

When Dr. McRae taught an honors world history course, it was renamed "Ancient****" by the students. She's a great teacher, and she makes even the most boring of readings very exciting.

I've taken 5 classes with Shannon so far, and she's an awesome professor. Very different, tons of fun..excellent teaching style. The things you learn in her class, you remember! She's best if you like talking, however..because her classes are run as discussion forums.
