I absolutely love the atmosphere of mutual respect and curiosity for the themes Sheila creates. One of those Profs. that demands respect in the kindest way. She speaks quickly, so try to swoop a seat near the front--after that, sit back and enjoy a great learning experience!

She is AMAZING! I absolutely recommend her. She was always available to discuss assignments and writing that we were working on and she gave amazing feedback on everything I handed in. I definitely improved my essay writing because of her. She's definitely a great teacher.

I passionately dislike English classes, but Sheila made it enjoyable! So nice, and gives the best feedback. I've improved my writing more in 1 semester with her than in the last 12 years of school. Grades tough, but perfectly fair for the university level. Is very clear about what she wants. Pay attention in class or your grade will suffer :)

Fighting through a highly structured course with little room for creativity, Sheila delivered a great semester bringing to life many modern works of literature from drama to poetry to novel studies. Fair marker, great feedback, has an unusual ability to facilitate good discussion in the class. Great prof overall

Shelia was my favorite professor that I had this term. She has a great passion for teaching and she made taking a first year English course interesting and helpful. I would definitely take a course with her again!

Best English Prof I've had at UVIC. She is so sweet and caring, but also taught me more than any other prof. Forces you to engage in group discussion and speak infront of the class, but it ensures you learn and take something from the course.

A very motherly-like professor. She is very caring and extremely helpful. Her class is based on class discussion. I hope she've provided more insights, but her poetry class fun. Very organized. Her marking is fair, and if you want to improve your grade, she is always there to help.

Sheila was awesome! Yes a hard marker, I failed my first essay but she let me re-do it and hand it into her again- and then re-do it a second time. She was always available for me to come in for help and would push deadlines if necessary. She just wants to make sure her students are trying to learn- if you are she is a super helpful teacher.

Burgar is a hard marker! but she teaches you the essentials. I am happy to have been in her class, but she makes you work, and doesn't give you a good grade. I wish i had an easier teacher to get into my degree, but she is a great person! Funny too

Self proclaimed hard marker, and it's true. She is a very nice woman but do not take her class because you will not get the mark you deserve. She doesn't want her or your degree to "go to waste" so she marks you so hard you can't get into any program. the highest mark being 75% should be telling her something.

Sheila is a fantastic prof! She's very enthusiastic about the material and really one of the kindest people I've met! She seems to care about ALL of her students, no favouritism here! Yes, she's a tough marker, but fair. If you take any Eng courses, take all of Sheila's that you can! She's a joy to learn from and to know!!!

Unfailingly kind and helpful, although a self-admittedly "picky" marker. Watch those umlauts! Ask for help, talk to her, and you will do well. She loves her subject, and her enthusiasm is contagious. Would take another class without hesitation.

Sheila's wonderful. Wasn't quite sure what to think of her at first, but her enthusiasm for Victorian lit soon caught on to the whole class. She always had reading recommendations and made it her priority to help students with any writing problems in their papers. Found the comments she wrote on the back of each assignment very helpful.

Oh Sheila! Such a cute little lady. Very helpful in and outside class. By far the most interesting prof I've had yet and is very interested in her subject. She challenges her students, so get ready to pay attn in class and make an effort; overall a challenging course with some great discussion!

I thought Sheila was adorable, approachable, and so very genuine. If you go to her after hours, she is exceptionally helpful and encouraging. Yes, if you are used to coasting on A's, you will have a little more difficulty here as she has a very high respect for the English language. Outside of that, loved the content and the class!
