This prof is really boring. I tried to listen to her but I fell asleep every time. The class is more like philosophy class (random boring stuff, some of black non-fictions). Your mark is all dependant on TAs. Try to be loved by TA in discussion then your mark will boost up. Read all books and the prof will love you if you read her favourite books..

I'm not a humanities-person but the course had a great selection of required readings. Sometimes the lecture concepts are a bit "up-there" but that may be just me. Just keep up on readings and you'll do fine on the essays. Only con that its a 1st yr course and its mostly science students, hence many of your peers will be unmotivated and disengaged.

Shelly is the best, most engaging professor UBC's English department has to offer. Quick-witted, interesting and so intelligent she can write her dissertation on the pottery barn and still get grants, she changed the way I will ever look at non-fiction again.

She's very knowledgeable and the theme was highly relevant. However, her teaching style is incredibly boring and non-engaging. Doesn't come across as caring about the learning of students. Overall, learned much more in lab than from her.

I thought the materials of the course were excellent, but I hated the course itself. Shelly is incredibly difficult to follow. Her ideas are so abstract that it's impossible to study, and extremely difficult to understand. She's not at all supportive of individual thought or ideas, and prefers that you write HER views on exams and papers.

One of the best classes and best profs I have ever had! Her lectures were incredibly well-prepared and delivered, her expectations were clearly outlined, and she was very helpful. Also, the class itself (19th century Af Am Lit) was incredibly interesting!

I wish all my classes could be like Shelley's. She respects her students & jokes around while taking the class work very seriously. I'm now interested in slave lit b/c of her. Excellent lectures--I skip almost all my classes, but never miss this one. Articulate, but speaks quickly. Talks about big ideas in a way that doesn't intimidate.

Normally I don't comment but I just can't agree with the comments here. I don't even know how to rate Shelly...because the entire year she might have lectured five or six times and when she did she posed questions to the other profs who would take over her lectures. Seemed uninformed, rather unprepared, drawings on the board served no purpose. no

She's nice enough and is helpful - WHEN/IF you can get a hold of her! Very flaky; never checked her e-mail and missed appointments a lot. Her writing is atrocious (I couldn't understand half the comments she gave me and had to go to her for clarification... even she couldn't figure out what she had written!)

Didn't get the spotlight her ideas really deserved. Had lots she could have contributed but didn't get a real chance. Kind of plain and delivers without too much emphasis but still nice. Helpful outside of class too.
