One of the best and most interesting professors I've ever taken. Very hard, you must find out exactly what she wants in her papers and disregard what you may have learned in prior English classes. Her grading is harsh, but if you are consistent with the readings and ask for her help you can pull off a reasonable grade. It will be time consuming.

Class is over Milton. If you like a challenge, this class is for you. Follow her directions for papers ask questions because she gets confusing. Daily quizzes and discussions. Failed first 2 essays even though I followed her directions. She's a tough one.

Took her for Milton. Failed the first two papers. I thought about dropping, but braved it through and managed to get a B+ by getting an A on my next three papers. You really have to figure out her "system." Once you do that, you'll be set. Send her outlines of all your papers the minute she assigns them, starting from paper 1!

I loved this class! Class time was spent talking about the books like in a book club, so you have to actually read the assigned books. We wrote 4 1-page essays and took a midterm and a final, but you can bring notes for the tests. She also gives reading quizzes about plot. Zivley is an amazing teacher and she'll really help clean up your writing.

Good, interesting books are assigned. This class is basically a book club all you do is talk about what you liked about the book. Her assignments are very specific so follow her guidelines exact. Her midterm and final are much easier than class paper assignments. I've taken her for 2 others classes as well and have done well in each.

A lot of reading is required in order to write paper. If you attend class everyday you'll have helpful notes for papers. Papers are very specific FOLLOW HER DIRECTIONS EXACTLY. Ask hundreds of questions regarding paper because she is not afraid to give you an F just because you didn't understand the assignment. She wears some pretty insane outfits.

Interesting class, great discussion, but that means nothing if you fail the class now does it? There are a few people who do well in this class; these people like her. The rest fail...wish I knew the secret but after failing the first 2 papers I dropped. Who needs the stress and hassle? She says "You will probably fail" the 1st day. Believe her.

I'm not going to lie; this prof. is hard. She doesn't always communicate assignments clearly and her grading is extremely tough. Ask as many questions as you can as often as you can. She WILL make you a better writer. I took her Milton class, and it became my favorite class that semester. This class is NOT for slackers.

We had to read: Play it as it lays, seize the day, october light, sometimes a great notion, floating opera, slaughter house five, and in the lake of the woods. Pop Quizes for each of them SO READ THE BOOKS! Follow her directions exactly and you'll do fine on her papers. Don't be afraid to ask questions she'll help you.

She is a hard grader, no doubt. But she is clear in her directions and, though it seems she is indecisive, she really will help unclutter your writing. The time you put into her assignments will be rewarded, it's not a fly-by-night class, definitely not. Read, listen, learn. A truly wonderful prof. that enjoys her subjects

She's the worst professor I've had in 3 years at UH. I'm an English major and I received a D on 2 papers in her class when 99% of the time I receive As on papers in other classes. She's rude, indecisive and singles out people to embarrass. She's definitely NOT RECOMMENDED!

Milton is a hard subject but she makes it fun. Scares the pants off you the first day but stick with it as it is worth it. She makes you a better writer. Also, she tends to give pop quizzes so be careful of them.

Her lectures are very lively and interesting. She is a strict grader, but as long as you follow directions, you'll do well. She expects English majors to produce coherent, well-written papers, and will accept nothing less. She spends a great deal of time explaining and modeling what she is looking for. I learned a great deal from her.

KEEP AWAY FROM THIS PROF!!! I remained in her class too long in the semester. I wish I knew then about this web site and I never would have signed up for such a disaster. I made a grade of 'F' in her class after just graduating from another school with a Bachelor's degree in English. There were high school teachers that flunked her class too.

I'm an English major and LOVE all of my English courses--but would NEVER take this prof again. She gives WONDERFUL, interesting lectures...but her grading is off-the-wall and nitpicking. I felt like she went about grading with the intent to fail people. If you have a good GPA and wish to keep it, stay away from Zivley. Take Pipkin. Or Weldon.
