A great prof - I learned a lot about a period I didn't know much about, and the readings were interesting. Be sure to go to office hours once in a while because Ahern is very helpful - he wants you to succeed. He is teaching to the students who come to class and try to learn - not to those who don't try.

Unapproachable. Biased. Decides your mark before you hand anything in. Double standards. This prof made me dread going to school everyday. He is intimidating and rude.

Very difficult second year english class, Ahern makes you work for every mark. Be sure to make use of both his office hours and the writing center or you are unlikely to see an essay grade above a B-. He will make you a better writer if you can make it past the initial poor grading.

He can be intimidating at first but he's a nice guy. I highly recommend taking advantage of his office hours because he's always willing to provide feedback, tips, etc. The class itself isn't easy so you really need to put the work into it.

Scary at first! Not always approachable. Take the time to go to office hours & take advice on how to improve, it will pay off. The fact that I had to push myself made it so much more rewarding in the end when I got an A- on my final essay. Took time to point out the grade before leaving the exam & expressed that he was proud with my improvement.

Interesting lectures, but his expectations in grading do not reflect what he teaches. He was not helpful in providing helpful feedback. After receiving an A- on a rough draft of a paper, I asked how I could improve on the final. He responded by telling me I had done fine and did not need to improve, leaving me questioning the validity of my mark.

Ahern is a nice guy, very helpful if you make the effort. He is a tough marker, but fair. Make sure to site your sources extremely well, he is fanatical about it. Obviously enjoys what he teaches and is passionate about literature.

Great prof. Kept my interest in the summer months. Renewed my interest in reading. Also, he introduced me to Rohinton Mistry, one of my favourite authors.

Great prof, best I've had at Acadia! He really wants us to learn, and cares whether we come to class and get engaged in the lit. we're studying. Tough marker, but fair. If you put the work in, he'll give you credit. Lots of comments on essays, so you can learn how to improve. Great smile, too!

Ahern challenges his students to think, and to express themselves clearly - he introduces interesting ideas - always willing to take the time to explain. Some students here have said he's not open to other points of view - not true! he just tries to teach us how to explain and prove our opinions, and will then accept them

Ahern loves what he teaches, which makes his class more enjoyable. He has a bad habit of accusing people of plagiarism, - so be prepared by citing your sources well! He will most definately call you on it if he thinks you are using MSN during his class. He is not openminded about things he doesn't believe in himself.

Ahern is intelligent but arrogant. He's a "know-it-all" and if you disagree with him, you will feel his wrath. He is a helpful/detailed but very tough marker. I'm not really sure that his class is useful/helpful... I don't think I actually learned anything I can apply to my other classes...

Great material, and the prof knows it inside and out. Less reliance on Powerpoints than some, but is that always a bad thing? Work hard and get rewarded.
