Comment:
When people say this man is a genius, they are not kidding. The profundity of the ideas expressed by Fuchs is staggering, and they are delivered without notes via a Hungarian-accented monologue. He speaks slowly enough that you can get a transcript, word for word, which you can use on midterms/finals. This class is a must-take for A&S students.

This is probably one of the very few classes at UVA Arts and Sciences where a student will learn to think. This classes lays a foundation for understanding the world.

Comment:
Both Fuchs and his teaching style are a little unorthodox, and frankly, his monotonous Eastern European accent can make things dry. However, he inserts some dry humor when you least expect it and the workload is generally light. Short (1-2pg) essays that are open-note and minimal reading required. You learn a lot though - the man is brilliant.

Comment:
It's impossible not to get an A if you take copious notes and do the readings. Books are useless for everything but pulling citations for the essay portion of tests. The lectures are astonishingly boring, so multitask (sudoku?) to keep yourself from drifting off. Non-Soc majors have no reason to be in this class.

Everyday professor fuchs comes in with no notes or outline and goes on a 1.5 hour highgly abstract monotonous ideological rant in his world war 2 like eastern european accent. Expect several ackward pauses, exaggerated facial expressions, accented mispronounced unintelligble sociological keywords, and a joke or two. TAKE GOOD NOTES.

He could deploy his massive intellect to crush students' souls, but instead kicks back and gives rambling lectures on classical social theory in its most digested and understandable form. With good notes and a grasp of the texts it's impossible to get a bad grade in this class.

A serious intellectual. I think his self-acclaimed status as a thinker results in easy tests (open notes). The material is fascinating and his presentation is excellent. Without question, a class worth taking.

Fuchs is really great. Once you get passed the fact that he's hungarian, he's really witty and even more knowledgeable. As everyone has said, tests are open note so make sure you go to EVERY one of them (or at least come up with some sort of buddy system).

This class is amazing. Prof. Fuchs is a funny and extraordinarily intelligent man who knows Social Theory like the back of his hand. Comes into class with no written material and is able to lecture clearly and with enthusiasm. This class was my favorite at U.Va., and it's not too tough, either.
