I had Holder for ENG 234 and liked him, but I wouldn't recommend taking him a second time. He tells all the same stories and uses all the same examples. He knows his literature, but gave very vague comments on my papers and tests.

One of the best professors at CMU. You HAVE to read the novels, but it is a class about novels. One short essay a week on the book we just read, no midterm, barely a final exam. Holder is brilliant, and he will help you as much as you want him to. Great at office hours and after class. No due dates but KEEP UP. always recommend

Had Holder for undergrad and graduate courses. Loved his classes. I became a better writer and thinker because of his teaching. I often use that slow, patient tone when I want to really emphasize something with kids...wow, 13 years ago and I can still hear him.

He wants to challenge you, and you can tell he really knows his stuff. He doesnt believe in due dates, so you can turn in your stuff whenever, but dont wait until the end of the semester. Make sure you proofread your papers, he can tell when you dont

Seriously the best teacher I've ever had. He knows his subject, and has some pretty amusing stories to tell. Yes, the class was challenging, but he doesn't ask you to rattle off memorized answers, he asks you to learn the subject. That is what makes him a great prof. Also, if you ask for help on a paper, he explains helpfully without being a jerk.

It is a lit class, make sure you read. The tests kind of suck, but you'll never be tricked them. I would probably have loved this class if it weren't at 9am. Holder knows each piece of literature about as well as someone could know it. If you're having trouble, ASK FOR HELP! He grades pretty harshly, but he doesn't really have paper deadlines.

Best professor I had at CMU. He offered insightful analysis and fostered a lifelong appreciation of American lit.

You must read for this class. It's all based on the readings and class participation. The final and weekly papers are the only written work in the class. He is pretty boring and hard to follow. He does however let you turn in papers late without a penality. Proof read them carefully, spell check won't cut it.

Very difficult class. The tests are very hard and specific, take good notes, you never know what questions he might ask on exams (which are short answer and essay). He grades hard on papers, definitely go to him for help or its likely you won't do very well.

It really does suck when you have read in an English class, especially an English literature class.

Classes are lectures, but they're basically open for whatever you want to talk about. Its not extremely interesting, but its not difficult. Lots of reading. He's really nice and seems very eager to help.

This teacher is my personal GOD. I am now an English teacher at the high school level and I still use my notes from his class. All of you who have left bad comments about Dr. Holder are just plain crazy. In addition to being a great teacher who is a wealth of knowledge, he is a good person who is willing to help you with any problems you may have.

LOTS OF READING! He is basically, a nazi in literature. He seems to have read every single piece of literature known to man. However, he really wants to help you, but you have to take the time to have him help you. The tests can be easy if you read all the material.

Holder claims that "You'll never have a paper read as thoroughly as he reads them." Well, maybe he does read them thoroughly, but he certainly doesn't grade consistently. Be prepared to feel like he's rolling dice to determine your grades.

Holder gives his political opinion and discusses how affluent his is and how hunting is stupid. For $800, I don't want to hear it.

Tests were easy, but he grades papers really hard. My advice is wait until you are a sophomore to take the class and do you papers early and go to see him about them. Don't do them at the last minute. You won't get a good grade.

Holder was basically on and off. Some days he is very engaging and you get the material very easily, then other days he can be a bit boring and all over the place. Pretty tough grader so be sure to go to HIM for help on things rather than other sources. Not easy, but still pretty interesting
