If you are going to take this course to fulfill the requirement and not interested in science at all, I don't recommend you to take his course. He is a good lecturer, a sweet man. Quizzes include the chapters we haven't yet learned in lecture and very specific, plus the final exam is accumulative with 100 multiple choices questions. BE CAREFUL!

Prof Dunn is really casual and funny. He repeats a lot of what the book says so you don't have to read for class (but do read for the quizzes), but class participation is important. He also uses a lot of questions from the hw on the quizzes. I'm no good at science but this class was pretty darn easy for me.

While Steve can get a little out of hand in the intro course (since it is a very large class) he is an amazing professor in the upper courses, where it's easier to talk to him one-on-one and get more help for concepts you may not fully understand. Amazing guy and hilarious as well!

Steve's a reasonably good lecturer, but he often lets his personal beliefs colour his classes; at one point he went so far as to ask whether the students thought that getting a job after graduation was more important than protecting the environment and decrying the entire socio-economic system as running on world-destroying polluters.

I took this class with lab (with Penny). Steve is a very nice man but this is a hard class. You have weekly quizzes or homework (it alternates every week - 6 of each). He doesn't explain what he wants clearly and he asks really specific questions on the exams that he only discusses in lecture in passing.

Very enthusiastic. Lectures are informative. 'Lab' sections are the best! He is there for help, wants to teach anyone about his subject. Extremely understanding man. Cuts students slack on assignments if they need it. All he wants students to do is want to learn about the subject. My favorite professor at MHC! (And I'm not a science girl.)

Whoa, the rater below me clearly missed the boat. No labs? Just lists of information to memorize? No. The table summarizing mineral properties is just to help with the labs, which are mineral & rock identification. How do you think geologists identify minerals & rocks in the field? -With their hand lens and by knowing mineral properties!

I can tell you how it was for our class: no context to the information. No labs, but lists of rock and mineral properties to memorize every week. An inability to teach us using any vocabulary other than unexplained buzzwords from geology literature. Looks at you like a space alien if you need help. Rude, defensive. A disaster. I say: avoid!

What a fantastic prof! He is clearly very enthusiastic and extremely knowledgable, and that makes the classes interesting even if you don't care about rocks and minerals much. He's easy to talk to and very willing to help you understand the concepts, and the exams are straight forward. Take this class, it's pretty amazing.

I wish Steve would have my babies. Too bad he's married. He's so cute with his hammer & pick ax. And he gets SO excited about things. Adorable! I just wish his field trips were shorter. Those can get painful. Honestly, take every class you can with him.
