I did learn in his classes, (I took many as he taught in one of my favorite fields- early US History), but he was unkind and (worse) unhelpful to me in his academic role as a thesis advisor. This was a few years back now, but be warned seeking his help outside of lecture: what you see in class is not what you get in person.

Comment:

Second time taking one of his courses and he definitely knows his stuff. But as my friends and I joked, he seemed like was really biased towards the Confederacy. A bit annoying considering it was a class on the Civil War. As well, his tests ask for more than he gives time for. He can also be extremely monotone in his lectures if you like napping.

Deyle is probably the most interesting lecturer I've had at UCD. Very efficient and to-the-point, never a dull moment. Very professional. Take his classes!

Professor Deyle is a very straightforward professor and can be funny at times. The material is fairly easy to understand if you go to lectures. Also, he is very helpful during his office hours and is more than willing to help anyone out. He really wants his students to succeed and it shows.

stands in front of the class, drinks his coffee from his thermos and lectures. That's it. he doesn't move around or change tone (a joke once in awhile), but he is straightforward and if you arn't super tired or hungover, you will learn a lot.

This is a good class. Deyle presents the material well and his lectures are straight-forward and well-organized. There is a lot of reading, but the reading is not dry like in many history classes.

Deyle is great. I had him for Jacksonian America. Clear, concise, readings enhance and follow the lecture. A good amount of reading but he did not over do it. He has a great sense of humor and he never talks down to students. Take him his classes are enjoyable.

I thought that Prof. Deyle was awesome. His lectures were very clear and he obviously enjoyed what he was teaching. He was also really helpful if you asked a question - I'd recommend his courses to anyone.

Deyle is a great professor! I hate history, but I actually enjoyed this class. If you don't like reading, don't take Deyle. As long as you go to lecture and study (you get the questions before the tests) you will be fine. Two essays and two tests.
