Dr. Voss literally changed my academic career. I went from being a near drop out to being totally immersed in my education and loving every moment of it. He will challenge you at every turn and his courses are the furthest from easy, but if you put in your best, you will get it back tenfold. Ignore the past reviewers, especially if you're in LAS.

If you think Dr. Voss is difficult, it is simply because you are lazy and don't want to do your reading. I have had four classes with him, and each one was very manageable if you are willing to do your work. He is an intelligent, effective, informed educator, who will do anything to help students who engage. If you are a slacker, you won't like him.

If you ask any LAS major, Dr. Voss is the best thing that could have happened in college. I am reading all of the past comments thinking everyone must think they are still in high school. It's hard work, but worth it. He is retiring this spring, and it a loss for PSUC. I have seen myself and others transformed after taking this class.

Worst professor ever. Took 100 level class hoping it would be easy since I'm a graduating senior and very busy. I was wrong. He was unclear about assignments and we had to do 17-20 page paper for a 100 class. He was very dry and made the subject less interesting than it could have been.

Comment:
It should tell you something when there is only one textbook on the subject and it was written by the prof. Uptight and old school, was Harvard educated in the late 60's and feels that he should teach in the same manner. Doesn't explain assignments well and expects students to figure out what he intended. If you interpret him incorrectly there is no recourse for you. Avoid at all costs.

Dr. Voss has been teaching this course in the exact same manner since about the mid-70s. His use of in-class visual aids is non-existent (other than videos), and so his lectures are beyond tedious. Students may not eat, drink, or wear hats in his class. He borders somewhere between overly rigid and downright mean.

NICE MAN. A LOT OF READINGS. REQUIRES EXTENSIVE CLASS PARTICIPATION. NOT FOR SHY OR PASSIVE STUDENTS, VERY INTELLIGENT MAN BUT IS VERY METHODICAL IN HIS WORK. IF YOUR NOT INTO PUNCTUALITY THEN HE IS NOT THE PROFESSOR for you!

This dude is a little ridiculous. He take his work very seriously. He is also a genius, has a doctorate from HAVARD. Even though he has his moments of greatness and good professorship, his 100 level classes are more like 300. Also his final exams are very open and he gives you very little guidance.

Worst professor I have ever had. He seems like a friendly man outside the classroom, but he made a reference to me personally to another student saying "I visited his office too much for help that wasn't necessary". I have never had so much work, or so many incredibly tough papers from one 100 level class. Unless you love history, avoid him.

This guy is extremely hard and very unreasonable. I tried to hand a paper in literally 5 mins late and he wouldnt accept it. He requires more reading then you could ever read in a life time, and obviously has no idea students have other classes. Dont take him plz, spare yourself the headache

It really is IMPOSSIBLE to keep up with all the reading he asks of his student... literally about 50-80 pages a week from about 5 different books literally. He is extremely inconsiderate for demanding so much, and obviously has no idea what 100 level class means at all, in his head he is teaching a 400 level class! Very rediculously difficult.

Lots of reading!! you have to role play so if your a quiet one, DO NOT take this class. you also have to lead discussions. His midterm is two very hard essays. If you are very interested in history, its a good class to take. if not AVOID it.

Okay, never take this professor for a survey level class, however for an upper level (at least HIS 385), he's pretty cool and laid back with the way he runs his class. And after taking a lower level, I didn't really look forward to this class, but it's actually been one of the easier classes I've taken this semester.

I had Dr. Voss in 1997. I am a college instructor now, and while he knows his subject, I firmly believe he is the worst professor I have had throughout my educational career. His lectures were unorganized and esoteric, and his grading practices seemed dubious. He knows history, but he failed to relate the subject to the needs of his students.

Too much hard reading, too much focus of the grade is from class participation, and it was too early in the morning. Did not feel prepared for the final exam at all because I missed the only offered review session.

I took him for Colonial Latin America and if you are thinking about it...DON'T. His class is worse than highschool. He makes you roleplay and he will sit in class for 20 minutes in silence if you don't ask questions. Hard grader. Don't do it. Please.

Well learned in his field, he knows what he's talking about. Somewhat challenging, I wish he'd scratch the role-playing but thats his style. Overall he's a solod professor who can teach you a lot.
