I took an English course with Laver several years ago. She's among the smartest instructors there, and she should be running the English dept. She's not for the lazy or untalented, so if you're looking for an easy A, look elsewhere. She helped me become a better critical thinker and writer. The best instructors are the ones who challenge you most.

Went in thinking it was a bird course, definitely not. In my first semester at McGill, Prof. Laver was my worst professor by far. Very disrespectful, incredibly rude with feedback, and fails to understand that most students take this course to improve their writing. Don't be fooled, it is not a bird course. A disturbingly hard marker.

Professor Laver is an extremely smart woman who knows how to write really well. She is an extremely hard marker, and expects a lot from her students but she will help you learn a lot if you attend class (which is mandatory and you lose marks if you dont), and do the work on time and with a lot of effort.

find it useless.. she may be a pro in writing english, but she is really unwise in other areas and inflexible. if you write something related to biology or psychology she thinks you are writing too technical even though they are common sense. for example, she doesn't know what brain cortical area means...dont take this class..

Research Essay and Rhetoric taught by Laver is horrible... the actual class is very useful, but this woman actually hates teaching it and it is obvious. I've heard amazing things about her in other classes (Arts Legacy), but there are so many things wrong with her teaching style for this class.. impossible marker, disrespectful, boring class.......

so no a bird course with her she is an evil ... for real take this course with anyone but her for serious such a hard marker, will have a heart attack and pounce on you if you put the comma in the wrong place. so unprofessional, comes to class hungover and expects us believe her when she insists that "suitcases" is singular you will die

pretty fantastic writing teacher, knows the weaknesses and works WITH students to get their writing up to a university level. Sweet lady... tough at first to weed out the weak, but once she has and she sees that you're working hard, she's incredible.

Who is giving this woman smiley faces? She's actually nuts! Her lectures were more about gin and her own inability to keep the class awake than they were about English literature. I heard she used to be a good prof, but I suspect I was deceived.
