I took 2 courses with Susan. I think she's a very wise teacher - a caring and encouraging one too. Her passion and knowledge really re-directed my own interests and I'm grateful to her for that.

Comment:

Susan is the best teacher I have had at Uvic. She is inspiration and very helpful both in and out of class. She is a tough marker but if you put in the effort you will be greatly rewarded. I hope to take more course with her in the futur. EXCELLENT!!!!

Comment:

Susan is the most helpful professor I have encountered this year: she's willing to work through essay difficulties and meet outside of class, and she is very encouraging and accomodating (i.e. not constricted to office hours and classtime.) She is a tough marker, but if you just put in the effort it's fine.

Insanely hard marker, and like most english profs, thinks her course is the only course (heavy workload). If you want to get in touch with your feelings, by all means take this course. Don't see the point of post-modern lit, its pretty dry stuff.

While Elderkin is a fabulous teacher and absolutely excels in her knowledge of the materials her expectation and time requirements are ridiculous. She exceeds the allowed work requirement by putting essays in exam format. It's a shame really because you don't get to enjoy her class... you're too busy worrying what comes next.

Enthusiastic & interesting. Cares about students and wants you to be challenged. Likes to use group discussions. This course was more about immigration & multiculturalism than Canadian culture in general, but she covered a lot of material I wasn't aware of. An eye-opening class for Canadians.

I really, really enjoy Dr. Elderkin as a person. As a professor, it depends on the class. She tends to stick to a discussion format, which is okay in a class that enjoys that, but really sucks in a quiet, uninterested class. She needs to be more open to changing her teaching style to fit the class. Regardless, she really knows her CanLit.

Mentioned in class that she thinks one person keeps writing all the bad comments on here... I like her as a person, and liked the choices in texts - it's hard not to find ones that you like, and authors you'll keep reading. She IS a hard marker, so be prepared, do drafts, etc. and get her feedback BEFORE handing work in or your grades will suffer!!

If you want a hug, take this class. If you want to learn something, you are better off with the intro to your 2$ thrift store novel. An idiot that only wanted to talk about everyones feeling during class. And everyone isn't lying, she is a diffficult and confusing maker. I dropped her course because her teaching made me want to kill myself.
