He is the best professor I had during my tenure at OSU. I learned so much from him, and took all of his classes. Expect to be challenged and do not fool around. This is what a college class should be like. Thank you, Dr. Odlin for being a superlative teacher.

Prof. Odlin is one of the best profs at OSU. The burden is on the student to do the work and come to class. Prof. Odlin will be helpful if you do. But if the student is lazy or not interested in the material, s/he will not do well.

This guy knows so much about linguistics it's staggering. His class is tough. He is also a little different which can be off-putting, but he is very nice if you take time to talk to him. He won't give you the answers but he DOES help students. You gotta read the book & you can't miss class/sleep or you're screwed, but it's college. Time to grow up.

Odlin is a nice guy i feel like. sure he's a bit diff. but that doesn't make him bad. he's well travelled, intelligent, knows what he's preaching and is genuinely interested. i feel he gets a bad impression because students treat him disrespectfully. so what do you expect back? if the subject matter interest you I would reccomend him. hes oldschool

Completely ignorant of his students. I have gone to him asking for help in understanding his grading and he basically told me to "deal with it". Gave no explanation and didn't read my email. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Worst prof. I have had at Ohio State so far. Please people, avoid him at all costs. HOW CAN YOU GET ANYTHING OTHER THAN AN A OR AN F ON A ROUGHT DRAFT?! Because apparently, my rough draft is of C- quality...

Class is a jumbled mess. Despite teaching an English class, the man cannot spell. Material is taught very dry-ly. Has already broken school policy in the way he has treated a classmate of mine. Assignments that are told to be optional are not (material is on tests/quizzes). Worst teacher I have had at OSU.

This professor is extremely disrespectful to his students. He does not see his students as anything other than "children". He threatened my grad school application because we were having a conversation, but one where I was questioning him about his homework polciy. Avoid him at all costs! I had to take my complaint to the Dean.

His teaching style is like watching a pinball machine for two hours; he bounces back and forth between concepts, confusing your brain into submission. I attempted clarification of an ambiguous exam question, to which he rudely cut off every word I said, closing his eyes and repeated his mantra, "if you have a concern please write it on your paper."

It is clear the man is a very smart in the world of linguistics. However, his issues far outweigh his skills. He refuses to answer questions. He requires busy work to be done, yet the questions are full of grammatical errors. Make sure if you decide to take this class that you understand it is his way or no way. He will accept nothing but what

This guy goes off on a tangent a lot.He looks unprofessional. The quizzes are 100pts for 6 multipart ?'s the midterm and final were no better. I found the grading ridiculous. Take a linguistics course it will help you about as much as this class.

I took two of Odlin's classes at the same time in 2004 (ENG 571 and 572). They were by far the most difficult classes I had during my undergrad. Most of the students dropped by the third week. I studied hard, but got Ds on most of the tests--but ended up getting Bs in both classes. I'm convinced he gives you a B if you stick it out until the end.

I didn't find Dr. Odlin to be socially hostile. He's a little awkward, but he's definitely not mean. And how can you not get A's on his tests and quizzes? Didn't anyone teach you how to study?

Not only did Odlin make good use of our textbook, he also was a great additive to the curriculum. I can safely say I learned more from his teaching than 90% of other courses.

Avoid this one. He's very dull and tests you on obscure minutiae. I think the class was mostly useless and Odlin could be very rude at times. If you're interested in this kind of stuff, take a linguistics class instead.

Dr. Odlin is the worst teacher in the English department at Ohio State. I would NEVER reccomend him for any reason. His lessons are confusing and disorganized, he is socially hostile, and contradicts the textbook constantly. The only reason you should ever take a course with Dr. Odlin is if you have absolutely no other choice.

Today was midterm. He said that the phoenetic alphabet we learned the previous class would be on it, but just little. It ended up being worth 16 points. The assignment asked us to transcribe words to and from the phoenetic alphabet and standard spelling. There are 20 phonemes for 5 vowels. I cannot memorize this AND the consonants in two days.

I enjoyed the class. The readings were very clear and helpful and the teacher was very interested in teaching. He knows a lot about this matter, and relies on his students to work hard to learn better. Very good class if you like Grammar. I recommend it!

BEWARE!!!! Just take the W if you have to. Never had writing a paper actually bring me to tears. Soooo so hard, mostly self-taught, Odlin is kinda okay - tries to crack jokes which is nice. Don't be deceived by the first week- just don't even bother with this course. Spare yourself that misery and the textbook you don't even use.

Worst class and worst professor. Very hard to understand- didn't know what to expect the entire quarter. Despite taking 4 pages of notes during class, half of the questions on the quiz's were not discussed in class.
