Comment:

Prof. Givens makes sure to include numerous perspectives on the topic and is unbiased when lecturing. Unannounced pop quizzes sometimes. Participation and the final paper are a large percentage of the grade. Prof. Givens is brilliant and could answer any question you have, and he is always available if you need help. Wish I could take it again.

If you participate, read the assigned readings carefully (they're lengthy), and write down every detail from lectures, you should be fine. Get a jump start on the big essay, because he grades tough on it. The midterm isn't bad, but the final is really hard, so make sure to go over everything from the course.

His tests are entirely lecture based. Always came into class and learned something new, I was hardly ever bored in class. This class in particular would be somewhat challenging for those with little previous knowledge about the Bible and religion.

Professor Givens is incredibly smart in anything relating to the Bible. He is very helpful if you ask for it, and is very clear on his explanations. This class is very interesting and I loved it, but it is a ton of information and the tests are pretty difficult and based a lot off of lecture.

Best teacher I've ever had. you'll hate him the first week just cause he's so damn smart. but his midterms and finals are actually kinda easy if you pay attention in class. and he's good about being available for essay help outside of class. overall he's not an easy teacher, but his classes are worth the effort.

He is an amazing professor. He will push you hard, but at the end of the day you will have learn something new and see things with a new perspective. It is worth taking him if you want to challenge yourself and learn. However if you are not a strong writer, it will hurt your grade.

Literally best teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Extremely inspiring and sets out to make "life worth living" with his lectures and his devotion to the humanities. This man made me consider being a professor for the first time in my life and made me understand so much about life. Take this teacher, dont complain about difficulty and enjoy!

great teacher until the grading comes in to the picture. shows up 5min late every class unless he's giving a quiz. didn't give a mid-term...? and the final did not relate to any of the lectures...yeah the lectures are good but unless ur intrested and able to get a word in with the Bible aficionados ur grade will suffer.

Excellent teacher with encyclopedic knowledge of Romanticism and the Romantic period. Able to mix contemporary and historical refs. Makes topics accessible to those unfamiliar with them. Has high standards but is very helpful if you talk to or email him directly. Would another class with him in a heartbeat.

If there were one person to beat Ken Jennings on Jeopardy, it would be this man. His lectures are interesting but don't be surprised if you never get above a C on a paper or if your class's midterm average is a 68%. You need to have an incredibly deep understanding of literature if you want to do well.

The best professor i have ever had in my entire life. He is incredibly smart and teaches the material extremely well. If you do the reading and try hard he will make it more than worth your while. I would try and take any class that Givens teaches, he is just that good.

This class ****ing sucks. Hes really knowledgeable which makes the class a little less boring but he has a very quiet manner and hes scary as****!!!. He grades really hard on the paper but the tests aren't so bad. Do the reading or youre screwed for quizzes. Avoid this guy like the plague.

I ended up loving Givens (and making an A, it is possible!) because he actually did make me like poetry I gen. hate. Don't go in with the belief that what he says will be above your head, and you will learn & enjoy it. Also--why is everyone so unwilling to risk a bad great for a great experience??
