Upon receiving back our term papers, Tim was not happy that many people were in the 50s and 60s and literally told most of the class they didn't belong in university and they were wasting his money. You have to work your butt off for good grades - it's possible but it's tough. He provides little feedback and avoids answering questions.

was very disappointed in this class. He was not very approachable and not very helpful. I found his grading very unfair and even though I worked very hard on my paper, my mark did not reflect it. Although it is supposed to be an intro to African history, I found the readings hard to understand. No structure to his seminars, people don't talk

I'm now taking his HIST 4410, and find it liberating. Great essay topics, short but engaging readings. He knows absolutely everything about African history; hes participated in some independence movements, and written at least 5 books. Quick to tell you when you're wrong, but quick to help you get things right. Calls things like they are. No BS

What a jerk. The first day I was in his class he slammed interlibrary loans...where a relative of mine works. He gave away the exam questions because he wanted us to do well so he could get his tenure. He gave me a 95% on a paper then told me not to bother entering it in anything because it wasn't that good. I found him to be the MOST unfair marker I have ever had. After he left my mark went from a 65 to a 75. I actually failed a paper for his class which I had never done before in my life!

Good prof, very knowledgeable. I dont find him in the least unapproachable. If you ever go to his room to ask him questions, he opens up bigtime and is very helpful. I find his marking a little hard but other than that,he gives you the benefit of the doubt

He may be very knowledgeable but when he makes it impossible to approach him, or has stupid map quizzes for tests, it really takes away from the class. He should not be so sensitive when people have questions and should be open to hearing them. Don't take his classes,he really needs to lighten up.

A few people have said they were scared when he yelled at them for falling asleep - YOU ARE IN CLASS, NOT BED!!! What are you? Stupid? I think Stapleton is a great prof, he really knows his stuff, and if you can get over the intimidation factor, you'll realize he's a great guy too.

i find this man remarkable. excellent lectures. knows everything possible about africa. love his sarcasm and his lecture style. i am not intimidated by him whatsoever. if you care about the class he will show respect towards you. some ppl dont see this fact. great prof. is one of my favs.
