Don't buy the textbook. It's useless, it is completely overloaded you'll get overwhelmed trying to look for the vital information and the text itself isn't even in chronological order. The biweekly assignments on top of the final paper are impossible to keep up with, and all 1-page papers are single spaced so basically they're 2-pages. don't take.

Easiest class I took at the college. Minimal work and the lectures (which are supposed to be 2.5 hours) are maybe an hour. 3 one page papers and a multiple group projects that can most likely be done 30 min before. Easy credit and a good guy. Tim Coates loves teaching and loves his students.

Comment:

I've taken 2 classes with Coates now, both of which I loved (the other was 350). He has a great sense of humor and really knows what he is talking about. I really enjoy going to his classes. He is witty and an overall really interesting person. Would recommend his classes (maybe he upper levels are better judging from the 100 level ratings)

Seriously, if you are a girl DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! it's entirely pointless and he's rude. You learn nothing. Don't buy the books they're a waste of money as well as the class. Don't waste your time because he always makes it seem like you're wasting his.

3 one-page papers, 3 short presentations of those papers...Prof Coates is one of my favorite professors thus far at CofC. He makes learning this material fun (if you can believe that). There is a lot of reading req'd, but you'll be okay if you skim it or don't read it at all. I hated history before his class. Take him. You'll be glad you did.

If you want a A take it. But don't be surprised if he lashes out at you unexpectedly. He has the WORST TEMPER! So be very careful what you do and say. He doesn't like girls either...But super easy class. You'll get an A without any effort.

We did not have a textbook but rather a collection of books that dealt, in one aspect or another, with the concept of Empires. A very rounded class with a structure that was very fitting to the type of class he was teaching. I recommend him if you are looking for something different and challenging.

Way too much reading for a 200 level course! He expects you to read an absurd amount of boring material. Plus in lecture he assumes you have a basic knowledge of Latin American history. I'm a history major and I didnt know half of what he was talking about. His method of grading is very different from other teachers and its hard to get used to.

Great guy, will do anything for you, and has the best way of relating material to our present day situation! Master the form of the "one page paper" and go to class and participate, couldn't have asked for a better professor. Will def be taking him for hispanic studies!

History of Colonial Brazil. For me it was a very demanding class because I'm not a history major, so the load of work seemed unending! A stickler about content and grammar on our 3 one page papers..lets just say he doesn't mind using humiliation for motivation! But if you are dedicated and work hard, you'll do great!

This class is a joke!! This guy will lose it over the smallest things. BAD TEMPER! I would have never taken him if I knew he doesn't even teach the material, all he does is put on a dated movie for 2 hours and make you write a paper. I feel like this is a waste of time and money!!!

I never really felt like I stuggled through this class, but I don't fee like I learned anything either. He does not really give any tests or have an attendance policy, but he does give a bunch of pointless one page papers on topics you definitely did not learn in class. Nice guy, but class is really a waste of time.
