Cool teacher; takes attendance 8 different times; very passionate. Overall, he's a good professor. However, I can't say the same for the TAs. They are hard graders, especially Anna van de Grift. She is a hardass when it comes to grading papers so try not to have her as your TA.

He gives you all the questions for the midterm and final, so there's no reason to get a bad grade. The essays aren't too hard, I did most of them overnight and got As. The TAs definitely have complete control over the grades. Lecture has interesting topics but can get boring.

This is a writing intensive course but the biggest drawback is actually the lectures. They're pretty dry but attendance is randomly taken. The material is somewhat interesting, and Professor Rutherford has a wide array of interests especially concerning rap music. The two exams given were spelled out. As far as grading goes, TAs run the show.

Rutherford is a very approachable guy. Very friendly and willing to talk to you about anything regarding the class. His lectures are very straightforward and informative. The transitions between units can be rough sometimes and they don't segway into each other well. Other than that 171 is great to knock down a writing intensive and social science.

This class was boring at times, but sometimes interesting. He takes attendance 8 times during the course, you can miss 2 times. All notes are posted on blackboard, so you really dont need to go to class...there were 4 term papers, all in which are writing intensive. Midterm and Final, in which both study guides he gives you are exactly what the tes

Nice person, solid teacher, very clear and helpful. It's an easy class if ur a good writer, if ur not dont take it or u will struggle since they grade hard. Lectures are boring but he gives u the notes, so u don't really need to pay too much attention as long as u use the notes to study for exams. Have Rebecca as ur TA, not Ishan! trust me!

He is amazingly intelligent. He knows how to articulate the material to the class so we all understand. He is such a sweet man. He never gets pissy about anything. However, he really expects some good papers. I don't mind I have learned a lot for him.
