While Professor Mathews is very knowledgeable about Spanish, he is a very tough grader. I feel like he changes his grading style with every assignment that we do in the class. He is very nice and will try and help you out, but you definitely have to work hard to get a good grade.

Comment:
Mathews is a great professor. I've taken two of his upper-level courses and worked with him as my advisor. He's very helpful and wants you to succeed. If you respect him and work hard, he'll treat you well. He's hilarious too. As for this class, it's great for communication skills, but a little hard. You'll work nonstop throughout the semester.

His lectures and practice activities are difficult to follow and are very traditional grammar lessons with fill in the blank drill and kill type exercises. His feedback is minimal and not very helpful. He takes points off without giving reasons and he tries to trick you with examples. Class was called communicative grammar but was anything but.

Professor Mathews is so knowledgeable! He is a little pompous and he's not for everyone, but I enjoyed his class. Participation is necessary and not optional. Most of your points in the class come from attendance and participation points.

Dr. Mathews is not a professor for everyone. I Loved him though. He is incredibly intelligent, though a little pompous. I took most of my upper level Spanish courses from him and learned a lot. I'm a grammar nerd so I loved his grammar rants. He's very easy to work with and easily accessible out of class time and will help you if you ask.

I feel like I learned SO much in this class. I would absolutely take another class from him because he is very knowledgeable about the subject and gives very interesting lectures. Class attendance is required to get a good grade, and if you put in the time to study for the tests youll do just fine.

I greatly enjoyed this class. Make sure you go to class and do the homework on time or else he'll give you a hard time. I learned a ton from him and he was very willing to help students who go to him. He makes class a good place to be.

The best Professor I have had so far! You will definitely learn a lot in his class. Participate alot and he will treat you good. Very interesting class. I recommend it to all return missionaries.

He's an excellent instructor and his text is an inexpensive customized study guide you can buy for about $10. As long as you keep up with the guide (which you go over in class), you'll be fine. He can potentially be a little offensive from time to time but mostly he's just funny. His class is very entertaining.
