Laid back to the extreme. Good marks are extremely easy to get but extra effort is needed for really great ones. Most classes take the form of vaguely connected chats about the books with frequent irrelevant rabbit trails. Don't expect to learn a whole lot. He WILL teach you how to write a good essay though if you missed that in high school.

Laid back and a nice guy. Lectures were interesting, encourages participation and will go off topic if encouraged. A bit of a hard marker, but the comments that he makes are actually helpful and he will recognize improvement.

By "reading culture" they mean "reading African American culture" so be ready to read a slave narrative, a boring play about Blues, and some essays about the civil rights movement. Tony is easily distracted, and he takes half an hour to start the class. Class is a waste of time. He simply points out the obvious.

Not sure the person below was in the same class I took. I learned a ton about Black American culture from Murphy, and was introduced to jazz, which was cool. Sure, he's laid back, but that made an early morning class bearable. And, the Ma Rainey play was great!

Loved this class. He left tones of room for discussion and promoted it in a way that other profs could learn from. Tony taught me how to properly format my essays and made helping me and other students a priority. Great guy, great prof!
