Dr. Upshur has an understanding of what level of work should be completed. This was a 400 level course on China's nomadic neighbors and she gave us background reading because none of us really knew anything about the subject going in. Challenging professor but very passionate and willing to help her students

I was a history major. After this class, I was no longer a history major. Her accent makes her English unrecognizable and she leaves historical analysis murky at best. How I miss my love of history...AVOID!!

Horrible teacher!! The only time I have ever failed a class was with this teacher. She made me actually hate a subject that I used to enjoy. If you feel like failing a class and throwing your GPA down the toilet take this teacher.

She is Chinese, so it is sometimes very hard to understand her. She is VERY passionate about her work and knows her stuff. However, she tends to spend too much time on China and does little to help in terms of homework. She criticizes people at the drop of a hat and even her 50-minute classes make you wanna scream.

Had her for Modern China. This class is difficult. The main problem was tests-50 minutes-all essay-minimum 5 pages. This was ridiculous and a race against the clock not a real assessment of knowledge. She was understanding when I talked to her and she gave me an opportunity for extra credit. Long lectures and a lot covered, but no study guide

She talks kind of fast & is sometimes a little hard to understand but very helpful when asked (I know from personal experience) Also very passionate! The class is graded on the basis of three test scores (one is dropped) Tests have everything from long essays to fill in the blanks. She is not evil by any means, just challenging & old-fashioned.

She knows her stuff, and gives very detailed lectures complete with many detailed visual aids, but grades extremely harshly, and tests are difficult to begin with. Only way to succeed, do ALL reading, take good notes on it and don't miss a lecture...

The only reason this woman is still teaching is because she has tenure. She is extremely difficult and very picky. If you have a problem and try to make up for it, she will refuse to assist you in any way. Simply put, do not take her for any class, period! She is the true embodiment of evil.

Great teacher; really knows her stuff on Chinese history. She is a difficult teacher, but if you're interested in history, you will learn more with her than any other teacher. Definately worth your time if you're a history buff.

She knows her stuff, but she is very hard to understand. Her test and exams are outrages, way to difficult for a 100 level history class. She teaches 100 history classes like they are gradschool history class. Do take her even if you enjoy history.
