Dr. Burton gives good marking feedback but also can be unclear as to what she wants on assignments. She is very approachable outside of class and truly cares about her students.

She is not specific in what she wants in assignments at all and relies way too much on D2L, which is very unorganized and difficult to find what she wants. Very difficult to listen to as she repeats "Um Ah" every third word. Grades very poorly yet gives great instructions on what she wanted you to do after the assignment. Don't take a class with her.

Comment:
Valerie was a tough grader when it came to such a simple course as UNIV 1020. The course was heavy in reading and fast paced. Unnecessarily difficult in minor ways. She really cares about First Year Success and the success of her students, which is why she pushes the limits as much as she can. Glad I'm done with her class, although it was helpful.

Comment:
Valerie has a vision of education being open and easily accessible and testing being more humane and based on knowledge instead of memory. She can speak in analogies, take marks off for not answering something just right, and she mostly uses D2L communicate; however, she will clarify if asked, gives amazing feedback, and is a fair grader.

Hard not to respect her boundless knowledge and kindness, she's pretty approachable, however her rambling speeches are vague and hard to follow. She posts these assignments on line and gives very little notice , and looks for specific answers and questions based on opinion, just keep up to date on d2l and you should survive. Nice lady none the less

Dr.Burton is something, just not sure what that something is. She doesn't really teach much as most of the time it is guest speakers and for assignments she just posts online and doesn't say a whole lot about them. Instead of actually talking about what is coming up she relies way too much on D2L. In my opinion only have her as a prof if necessary.

She is a helpful teacher. She helps me with my work and explain things I don't understand. But i am failing the class. I don't understand most of the work or readings. You have to make sure the essays are very specific and long. Good luck if you have her as a teacher!

Dr. Burton is very enthusiastic to chat with, and help students. Her information is well-organized, but sometimes she talks in riddles and can be hard to follow. I am not sure that I would like an on-campus class but I have to say that she makes use of D2L's potential. Nice lady, work for your grade and you should do well.

This professor. Creative, odd recurring thoughts, ample of energy, nimble on her feet is what I would use to describe Valerie Burton. Only recommended if your interests in life are odd or mysterious.

Very unclear in what she expects. Doesn't lecture, but instead rambles on for 50 minutes say "um" every three seconds. I got an 'A' in her course, no thanks to her. Only take a class with her if you want a very difficult semester.

She is very unclear about what she wants, but is an easy marker. The text books were completely unused, but she provided articles to read occasionally. Her lectures seem to follow no pattern, and I took no notes at all and got an A, and know several others that did. There was no formal tests in this course, only essays. Very very easy grade.

Knows her history. But is very scattered and unclear about what she wants/expects from her students. Rambles on and on while randomly changing topics or centuries. There is no clear cut objective of the course.

Very nice lady who loves her subject but very scattered. Half of the time, I wasn't even sure what century or country she was talking about. Tests and assignments are fairly easy, though, so it's not a bad course.

If you are looking for a clear outline to a course, you are looking in the wrong place. Burton rambles non-stop, never makes a clear point and is hard to follow. She spits out random points from all angles-CONFUSING! She is never to the point, and leaves you wondering what she wants and means. Hard marker- rude- pessimistic-scattered-has favorites.

If you have a choice of taking this course with valerie teaching, don't!!!! she is passionate about history but can not teach what she knows. She speaks in a language you can't understand and never reaches teh point of what she is lecturing on.I found she is not willing to help you understand what she expects of you.
