As a male who was discriminated against by her and after reading these reviews/talking to others I figured it out. She does not like anyone who looks like a jock/frat-boy. She also doesn't like guys who have thoughts that are not hers'. If she doesn't agree with you change your opinion or the class. Glad to be done with my undergrad...

I had Val as an undergrad and a grad student. She is definitely one of my favorite professors. Val's definition of feminist is someone who believes in equality, so I don't at all buy the claims that she is biased towards men. All of my guy friends loved her classes...just be open minded, the purpose of college is to challenge your beliefs.

Took her over the summer for foundations/critical research and it was a pretty straight forward/easy class! multiple choice exams and 1 group project. you just need to know the bolded terms in each chapter and you'll do fine.

The rumors about her not being fair to men are COMPLETELY false. I am a man and she was nothing but very helpful and respectful. She went out of her way to help the students understand the material. You don't really need the book. Just go to class and take good notes and you'll get an A. That shouldn't be hard because her lectures are interesting

Though she is highly biased and unrealistic at times, she does know feminist rhetoric. However, if you have even a trace of testosterone, you will not be graded or treated fairly. The word around SDSU is she gave a male student one of the lowest grades in her class based upon a final paper, which then won a national top paper award.

Val is awesome. knows this subject inside and out. She holds back a little. sometime you get the male reaction in class and she calmly and cooly puts them on their ass in a nice way! Go to every class and do every discussion question for extra credit. Then relax about every thing else.

I felt bad for the guys in her classes (I took a few...305, 452, feminism in rhetoric). I got the feeling that unless you see it her way, you're either just wrong or unenlightened. Other perspectives are listened to but not really accepted, at least mine wasn't. Easy and interesting classes though.

Val is by far my favorite prof. that I've had at state and I'm on my 9th semester. She loves the material she teaches and really cares about her students. book and lectures go hand in hand I read and brushed up on notes the night before tests and got an A in the class. Loved the lectures, loved lectures and loved her!!

Val is amazing, she will make you realize things about yourself, relationships, life, and people, that will completely change your perspective on "everything". Take this class, this is why we go to college, for classes like this and teachers like Val. Fairly easy class, I got a B.
