Comment:
Took this class in 1989. I have never forgotten his class, or his complete disdain of mindless followers. Although a little shocking for a 19 year old conservative, he really opened my mind to the importance of being an independent thinker and fearless at that. I find him to be relevant even today, as I witness world events and social engineering.

Prof Petry was a very challenging professor. Most of us were not prepared to think as students - the major requirement of his course. He took students on walking tours of New York City. They influenced me to become a professor of urban studies. He also constantly discussed issues of social justice. Very inspirational person!Class of '66

The best Fairfield has ever had or ever will have. Brilliant, passionate, committed to the intellectual life and social justice. A lot of reading which I got to love: tough and fair: pushes hard because he cares about student's education: not for whiners, complainers or grade hounds. Instilled in me a passion for learning: he is now a friend

The best teacher I ever had before or after Fairfield Brilliant, passionate, the most well read teacher I've ever seen. He is hard and pushes hard because he loves the work and the students: Not for whiners and grade hounds but for those who value the intellectual life and I do 50 years later: I visit him and He is now a good friend.

Walter Petry is the finest educator & academician I've encountered by an enormous margin. His workload was unimaginable. Attendance not mandatory, but all were there early. Textbook? 1st day told responsible for entire contents, would be so tested (we were)& never mentioned again. Walter Petry, a teacher of a lifetime & a lifetime teacher.

Hated the work then... 36 books and/ or source docs to read..but one of the most influential courses in my college career and still impacts and influences how I view and perceive unfolding world events even this day. Of all the teachers, him I remember and wanted to find more out about, even after almost 50 years. One of the great ones. Thank You!

I graduated in 1974 and things I learned in his class come back to me almost 40 years later. He opened my mind and fed my spirit. He was not easy, but it was worth it. By far the best teacher i have ever had, and I went on to get two Master's Degrees.

I had Petry over 20years ago and I still remember what he taught me. He's hard but amazing. You can't regurgitate the textbook, or notes, but you'll think for yourself, and that is always a good thing.

I studied under Prof. Petry in several courses (1957-61). He was the best undergraduate professor I had. He expanded the mind ( I am a conservative and was then).

It has been 25 yrs since I took his freshman Western Civ class, but he is one of the few professors who taught me how to learn. At the time, I spent most Wed. nights frantic prepping for his weekly Thurs. quiz, but seriously, I still remember stuff from his class years later. He knows his stuff & is passionate about it & his students.

Petry is by no means an easy teacher or even reasonable. However, i really enjoyed his class and he was definitely one of the most intelligent people i have ever met. He really cares and is passionate, and thats important. Dont take him if u are not interested in hte topic or class. I am a slacker and yet i loved doing the work for this class.

Dr. Petry must be respected. Sadly, he is being bashed because he cares about learning. His classes always challenged us to think about the ethical aspects in human nature. Dr. Petry cares that his students learn well. I strongly and proudly recomend Dr. Petry for anyone who wants to learn something valuable.

I think its funny how many people post that the man is not for "rich" fairfield students. I am far from rich, and I thought he was a real anus-clown. So there. I have had many other "difficult professors" at this school, but I have pulled A's in all of those classes. This man is just unreasonable.

Best teacher of my Frosh year, openbook quizes, no papers, makes good material more interesting, very animated. Very preachy, however, and passive rich fairfield types get offended by his constant reference to how ignorant we all are. Definitely a class to remember though, hope he doesn't retire.

This man is the worst prof i have ever had. He does NOT know the meaning of constructive criticism. He constantly bashed our class and told us how stupid we were, seriously. He was never there for extra help and was constantly going on about how we as students were a disgrace to America's future.
