Had him for a grad course. He is down to earth and knows the material but his assignments were a bit overkill. Also, he is an extremely critical grader. Its hard to know what he expects on final exams and papers... I would add unreasonably so.

Loved Metcalf! Knows a lot, teaches you a lot about the controversial side of American history. Lots of essays, one midterm and final-both online/open-note. Lecture not mandatory, but you need the notes for the exams, otherwise you probably wont pass them. Read the books to write the essays!! Overall easy class, Metcalf was good, would take again.

Really amazing teacher and is super passionate about what he teaches. He is so easy to listen to and makes his lectures really enjoyable. I am not a history person, but enjoyed his class because he was great!

Okay prof. Not my fav but not bad. Requires 4 papers on assigned books. Doesn't give feedback on those unless you go to office hours. Online tests: open book, timed, essay-based. Tested material comes from lecture. Take a better prof if you can, but over all, he seems fair and you shouldn't dislike him.

Prof. Warren is a great professor. He is very knowledgeable in US history. His lectures may be long, but they are loaded with great information. He is not a hard grader and does not take attendance, but you should come to class to make papers and studying easier. We did not have any nonsense homework or quizzes. Very straightforward and flexible!

Smart guy but terrible professor. This class is moderately hard (harder than it needs to be for a freshman level class), and he is very boring to listen to. Speaks slowly and has a monotone voice, makes everyone want to fall into deep sleep 5 mins into the lecture. Not flexible either

Make sure you take the online quizzes. They are the most tedious part of the class, but usually make or break the grade you're going for. You'll have to read the textbook a lot to do well on his tests. There are 3 tests, 4 papers and a weekly reading quiz. Attendance isn't a grade, but if you don't show up you need to really study the textbook.

He really knows the subject well. I would get a bit bored in class but attendance isn't mandatory so you can just not go. You have to read a chapter every week and take an online 10 question text. It's easy to get an A on them if you read. Four 3 page papers are assigned but they aren't graded harshly. The exams aren't too difficult if you study.

The class was straightforward, and it was made easier by the fact that this was an online course. He was a somewhat quick grader when it came to grading the essays. Overall, he was a good professor.

Everything besides the audio from the lectures was awful. He never helped us improve from paper to paper, the tests were super hard and the study guide was WORTHLESS, basically just chapter headings which you could find on your own. Impossible to make an A. 13 of the class droped. On my paper I spent 50+ hours and he said they never give out 100%.

Pretty chill, but he doles everything to his TA's. I went to the lecture class maybe 4 times and realized it wasn't worth it because you can learn everything he says from either the forever long chapters or from the discussion class with a TA. Everything is graded by the TA's so i cant really say that he is a hard or easy professor.

Dr. Metcalf was a great professor. His lectures over post-Civil War US History were really interesting. He is always a fair grader, and he will help you if you need it. The class was structured around 16 quizzes, 3 exams (not comprehensive), and 4 essays. He is a nice man, and he always has interesting stories. I would recommend taking him.

While the lectures seemed like they took forever and the papers you have to write definitely take lots of time, it was an overall ok experience. He lectures with powerpoint presentations but often forgets to change slides. If you need to take a history course, this one is pretty good.

Dr. Metcalf was a great teacher, and highly entertaining. This past semester he changed the teaching style, so there was only one book- and we had to write two papers. The midterm and final were essay style, and as long as you pay attention you will do fine. I would highly encourage Dr. Metcalf.

The only problem I had with Metcalf was the weekly quizzes. They totally screwed me over. I never read the book once and made a B. He posts the lectures online.

Interesting and engaging teaching. 6 Textbooks, 1 essay and 3 exams. If you get ahead and read the books you will be absolutely fine and struggle to get anything but an A (a generous marker, I confused 'Nebraska' and Niobara' and still got full marks. TL:DR, lots of reading but generous marker. Depressing/dull(ish) subject but engaging teaching.
