Even though I got an A+ in her class, I couldn't stand this teacher. She loved the sound of her own voice so she would repeat what we had JUST SAID. It was such a waste of time. She didn't give us speaking practice time and there were no oral tests. We just listened to her all the time. She only cared about character writing and our test scores.

Took Chin134 Beginner Intensive Chinese. It's a really tough course as it is a 6 credit course in 6 weeks, so expect a lot of homework and practice everyday. She is a great prof, super nice, and really cares about her students. Once, I was late to class and missed a quiz and was very worried, but she stayed in at lunch to help me take it!

She's very kind and helpful. Whenever you ask her a question, she will explain thoroughly until you understand. The class is very clear and organized. The workbook and textbook are both used a lot. Homework can take 2-3hours. More if ur really bad at memorizing characters.

Did quite well teaching with such difficult course material. Great English for a Chinese prof. Quite nice, but picks on people a lot. Favoured the "better" students. Overall not bad though.

Took 104 & 108 with her. Very clear, patient, and really(!) genuinely cares about students. Her English is amazing, makes it easier to learn from her. Tests get harder, but READ OVER THE DIALOGUE(!), do the homework, and practice the characters (pinyin is not too impt). Not hard to get over 80%. I loved this class, Xia Laoshi, and the people in it!

An extremely nice teacher. Her pronunciation of Chinese is immaculate which really helps in learning oral skills. Relatively good English for a Chinese teacher; has a strong grasp of English terms for explaining Chinese grammar. Personable. Likes to hand back assignments and tests in descending order of grade, not uncommon for Chinese people.

Xia Laoshi is very strict, picks on people in class, and speaks so fast that often it is difficult to understand what she is saying. She marks really tough, giving me the lowest grade I have ever gotten after four years of school. Most people dropped her class during the second semester. If you want a low mark, enroll in her class!

Nice person, but she can pick on people. She tries very hard to ensure that everyone's questions are answered. She made my introduction to the mandarin language very smooth, but sometimes when we did dictations her tones were difficult to distinguish. (Some say its because she has a Shanghai accent) I'd recommend her to other students for sure.

Definitely a great professor. She made the introduction to Chinese smooth, and the progression of the class is at the right pace. She's incredibly nice, and takes a genuine interest in your efforts at learning Mandarin. Obviously, showing an interest in chinese culture and traditions will help you to do better in her class.

Pretty nice teacher. Must study for tests, answers must be EXACTLY like text. Can get a lot of marks into final mark if you participate a lot during course.
