Lenient if you make an effort to come to each class and understand the material. Gives 2 essay tests, 2-3 papers. Grades hard on papers, but he also gives a review for the tests which basically ARE the tests. Do the review completely, and you can ace the tests. Made near 100s on the two tests, 80 avg. for the three papers, and got an A in the class

Dr Nelson is a very competent professor who made philosophy tangible. The test pattern is short essay/2 slightly longer essays, but very managable with the review he gives. even if you dont make it to class very often you can still get a good grade. Two paper are needed for the course, but quite managable.

He cares a lot of what he says in class, so you better go to every class and take good notes, sometimes is not even that necessary to read the book. His assignments (essays) are difficult. In the exams he also puts like 2 or 3 essays, so be ready to write. . .

Extremely boring, people almost never showed up to class. Often went off on unrelated topics, has a lot of trouble trying to formulate actual examples of what he is talking about. Doesn't know much about political science. Nice enough guy but wouldn't recommend.

Comment:
the professor is egotistical, you are wrong and he is right, regardless. Any information you care to relate from another field is also wrong, and a detriment to your grade. I would avoid this professor like the plague, unless you like lowering your gpa after having spent the time necessary to study and read.

I took this guy for PHIL 1305, Moral Philosophy. He lectures constantly, leaves no room for questions. If he allows you to ask a question, he doesn't really answer it. His lectures don't help you understand the philosophers. Several in my class felt this way. He & TA grade the essays & papers pretty tough. Great philospher, bad teacher.

Dr. Nelson has a unique style of lecturing. He seems to at first have a "scatterbrained" approach but when you sit down to take a test or write a paper, all of the pieces come together. Good prof.

He is a Great proffessor!! I often lost him in the lecture because he gives too many diff views, but I guess that's the nature of Philosophy. If one can write well and attend most of the lectures, it's not difficult to make an A.

He's interesting and incredibly nice. This really shows in his teaching style (very tolerant answering questions and offering multiple explanations of material). He often uses current events to illustrate his points, which makes class fun.

I took this class with my boyfriend. While everyday he fell asleep, I tried to take notes. His lectures are absolutely boring and he seems to just ramble on. He is a picky grader of the papers you are required to write. However, if you are a good writer and you have some understanding of what's going on you can still do well. I managed to get an A.

I would suggest that you take this class in the summer. The material goes so slow and is boring. Not an easy class because teacher is so picky about papers. 2 1pg papers, midterm, 5 page paper, and comprehensive final. Good Luck

Hardest part about this class is trying to stay awake. Toward the end of class all you see is heads on desk or eyes closed. Mainly talk about Plato Socrates Aristotle and many philosophers. Spends whole period on a minute subject..boring boring boring
