Tate is so kind and you can tell he really cares about his students and wants them to learn. however, he makes absolutely zero sense. he is unorganized and doesn't tell us what we have to do and it takes a couple days for everyone in the class to figure out what he means/wants from you. you don't have a choice on if you have him, so just a warning.

Comment:

Tate is an amazing professor. His class changed my way of thinking and is unlike any class I have ever taken at JMU. Don't get me wrong, you definitely have to try in this class, especially on quizzes every week, but it is well worth it. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you need to be at lectures, and they are honestly very interesting. BEAT NAVY.

This class was not easy for me, and if Tate hadn't been unable to teach the second half of the semester, I may have gotten a worse grade than I did. Saying that, this man changed my life and I wouldn't have regretted taking his class even if I had failed it. He is the most inspirational and best human being I have met on this planet so far.

Tate is a great teacher! But he pushes you, so if you can't handle being pushed beyond your comfort zone or doing alot of work then he isn't the teacher for you. Go to every class, it's not boring. Study for the quizzes each week. Worship Meggs and Sagemiester. Helvetica and Baskerville are your friends. Beat Navy.

Tate doesn't give any guidance. You may think you're doing well, and he'll love your process and your models, but then he'll throw you under the bus during critique. He doesn't realize that students need professors who will be direct and tell them when something is wrong. He'll let you go all the way, only to let you drown when it counts

I had tate for modern architecture and history of design. Best professor i've ever had. He changes the way you see and think of things all around you. Has the best stories so that makes class enjoyable. A lot of work to keep up with so make sure you don't get behind. Definitely take him if you can!!

Tate is awful. He only speaks in philosophical sentences. He assigns so much work that its not humanly possible to get it done. If you don't make things he likes he doesn't think you are smart of creative. He thinks he is a genius and that everything he says is brilliant when it isn't. If you argue with him he still wont listen to you.

Tate, is great! the people who complain are complaining about hard work/having to figure out the answer for themselves.Tate is a professor who will push you, learning how to be an individual who takes guidance but is their own leader, and he likes it when you test him that is the point to see how strongly you hold to your own thoughts and ideas.

Tate pushes students. In my case, he pushed me too far. He threw away my art because he didn't like it. He gave so many assignments that I was forced to withdraw from the class so that my other classes weren't affected. While he is great, Tate is extremely unrealistic and I was disappointed that his class has nothing to do with interior design.
