Fantastic and passionate professors. One of my favorites at BU. She prioritizes learning over everything. Only had 1 paper & 2 presentations in this class with no final or midterm. Take this class

I absolutely loved roman history with Professor Varhelyi. She's such an amazing & fun professor that i decided to minor in classics! Very helpful & accessible outside of class. If you're considering taking this class, definitely do so. She made me look forward to go to class everyday. Her lectures are stimulating & she always cracks funny jokes!

Professor Varhelyi is an amazing professor! She easily connects the ancient world to the modern and she makes lectures very interesting. She cares so, so much for her students and for their wellbeing, beyond just their academic performance. She doesn't have an accent like other reviews have said. She is a very intelligent, inspirational professor.

She's extremely knowledgable and great at connecting the past to today. If you do the readings and go to class then you will do more than fine. Sometimes she is a little hard to comprehend because of her accent but will laugh about it and try to make you understand what she is saying. Just make the effort and you'll do fine in the course.

Prof. V. is extremely enthusiastic but not in an obnoxious way like some professors. I'm not a classics major, i'm a religion minor and i really liked this class. its easy and interesting what more do you want.

My favorite subject, SO disappointing. Professor would be better suited to teaching middle or high school. She makes everyone read along in class the material she assigned for homework. Tests are very difficult. I was miserable for the whole semester, and I love the subject.

We had a tough text (Petronius), but she was very supportive and fun and didn't shrink from any of the dirty jokes and references. Very enjoyable class.

She's a nice person, but she is not fully proficient in English and her accent can be hard to decipher often. As to the difficulty of the course, we had both a badly choosen text for translating as well a s not very helpful version of the text(there was not a word of English present), even though there are better editions available.

Near-weekly quizzes are open book, but tests are as much geared towards one's ability to memorize as towards understanding (personally would prefer the latter, but everybody's different). If you're not great at rote memorization you can prove your intelligence via papers (2 total)--prob. the only reason I got a B and not a far lower grade.

Wonderful class. Wonderful professor. She is very clear (excellent parallels between antiquity and modern life) and really seems to care about her students. I would recommend this class to anyone.

She's really nice and tries to keep her lectures interesting, but she talks so fast. Read the reading for the quizzes. They might seem like they aren't worth a lot, but they add up. Also, know dates for the test. [She LOVES dates.] Overall, great class.
