Abe Stoll is one of the best teachers I've ever taken at USD. He is unbelievably smart, and he made me interested in books and subject matter I previously couldn't care less about. He was always helpful in office hours and I wrote my best essays under him. Beware though, he puts your fate in your own hands. No attendance policy so it's up to you.

He gives you guidelines of what he thinks he wants for papers then somehow changes his mind midway through reading them, which makes it near impossible to get a good grade

Dr. Stoll is a wonderful professor who brings many different genres and ideas into his literature classes. His Shakespeare class covered sexism, racism, philosophy, and economics-- it can be a lot to digest but it is completely worth it. He expects you to put effort into the class and participate, so stay engaged!

Dr. Stoll is one of the smartest professors at USD. Extremely nice and helpful, never condescending. Two 5pg essays, one 9pg final exam. No tests or quizzes. Insightful lectures to help build for your essays. Fair grader. What you put in is what you get. Always go into office hours for help with your essay. Participation counts for a lot as well.

GREAT teacher. He is obviously very knowledgeable (not to mention attractive!) and his lectures are always fascinating and incredibly insightful. I always looked forward to this class. He isn't an easy grader, but he is a fair grader; the grades he gives are a direct reflection of your own writing skills.

Very, very cool guy. He's definitely one of my very favorite teachers at USD. Not an overly easy grader, but if you participate in class discussions, attend class, and already have writing skills, you should have no problem getting an A. He types out very thoughtful responses to papers, which was amazing. A really stellar and intelligent teacher.

One of the best classes I've taken at USD. Makes you think outside the box. A hard grader, just do the reading and you will find his insights inspiring. I recommend it for purposes of self-growth outside the classroom as much as inside.

Sucks period. Got a B in his class and he said my 87% wasn't a B+ so I moved on. Helpful in office hours. Hard grader and talks the whole class. Gives you participation points inconsistently. If you participated the most in the class he will give you a worse grade than some that has spoke 2x the whole year.

Went to England for an Intersession Shakespeare class. He was enthusiastic, helpful, positive, and made me appreciate Shakespeare more than ever. He IS picky w/ papers, but if you need help, he's willing. He loves participation, & will help you build off a weak answer without condescension. I would definitely like to take another class with him.

I took this class as a GE. the class is quite in depth and challenging. If you are interested in Renaissance Literature or are majoring in english, this course will be easier and quite interesting. He is a very hard grader. possibly the smartest professor i have had. 2 papers, final is take home paper. and participation.

Dr. Stoll is an incredibly smart man, there is no denying that. He is very open to comments in class and doesn't embarrass people who have no idea what they are talking about. However he is really tough grader on papers. Visiting him in office hours is worth it. He's always willing to help and he's interesting to chat with. Great class!

Had him for Brit Lit and Milton. He was very smart and intellectual. definitely fairly anti-Catholic and Liberal - his interpretations of literature are view through these biases. Any "sunday-school" interpretations of the material are usually dismissed. Good professor but make sure you agree with him.

Smart, great reading, enjoyable lecture and material. Impossible grader. He has something specific he wants from you and if you are not reading his mind, it's impossible to get an A. Seems miffed he has to put up with USD. Acts like he feels he should be teaching at Princeton and is better than USD.

Dr. Stoll is probably one the smartest and intellectually deepest professors at USD. He inspires his students to go that extra mile, and he is always willing to help guide them along the way. Talk to him in office hours about the papers. He is pretty funny as well.

I don't get this guy. I'm an English Major and an A student, and the highest grade I have gotten is an A-. He leaves comments on the papers, but even if you fix exactly what he says for the next paper it wont matter, your grade barely goes up. Class isn't challenging, but you just can't get an A.

I don't know how to get a good grade on his papers. His comments aren't helpful to improve future papers and he always says, "push your ideas further" but how far are we suppose to take them? To this day I am not sure how to get a good grade on one of his papers. The more time I spent, the lower grade I got. Don't know what to tell ya.
