His Sci-Fi Film class was one of the most enjoyable and challenging classes I took at Pitt. You're expected to read a lot and create a thoughtful short analysis to bring to each class meeting, and you're encouraged to share your ideas in class. As a sci-fi geek, I found Adam's discussions mind-bending, but this is definitely not a blow-off easy A!

Lowenstein is one of the best professors I have ever had. His classes are rigorous and challenging but he is more than willing to help you out if you ask. If you slack off things may not go so well, but if you are dedicated to the subject matter it will be an amazing learning experience. I Highly recommend!

Lowenstein is great! He grades fairly and values class discussion. His lectures are very well organized and easy to follow. He requires that you not just do the readings before class, but think critically about them as well. He's a very helpful professor if you go to his office hours. I highly recommend taking his classes!

Lectures were helpful in understanding the assigned text. Discussion though was where the course and the professor and the university failed me and my students. The content of those assigned texts coupled with the professors' premises of subjectivism, incoherent emotionalism and anti-rationality made this course an epistemological vacuum.

He's a wonderful teacher! I've taken two of his classes, and they have been the two best classes I've taken at Pitt. He is exceptionally helpful and easy to communicate with. Some people on here said he didn't help them, but I wonder if they bothered to ask? He was always more than willing to help, and he gave me excellent advice on grad schools.

Adam is a terrific teacher- one of the best I've ever had. He expects you to work hard in his class, but he works just as hard to pass on his vast amount of knowledge. His lecture style is very easy to follow and informative, but you have to come to class prepared to get the most out of it. If you're a dedicated student, take his class!

AMAZING!!! Intimidating at times but wicked smart and has so much to offer as a professor. Witty/dry sense of humor (and a really funny laugh). Great selection of films, not too dry not too commercial. Work hard and it won't go unnoticed. Left every class with my mind racing in the best way possible. He will rock your world. I worship this man.

The War Film. Quite simply the most powerful film class I've ever taken. It's the one course where I wouldn't have cared if I didn't get an A because I learned so damn much.Take heed though: this is NOT a blow off film course. Screenings are mandatory, participation is required and theres a lot of reading and writing. Don't miss this gem of a class.

A little pretentious, but not horrible. He wants you to learn and if you show you want to learn he'll be happy. Pretty easy on grading.

very very strick but a very good student I still can't believe I got a good grade in his class. He made you think for ages. the smartest and the most arrogant professors at pitt. I advise you to never take his class for an easy A. Very clear and he will work you ass off in class.

Prof. Lowenstein is a prick. Not much else to say about him. Sure he knows a lot about film, but he is so condescending and rude that it prevents him from sharing any of this knowledge effectively.

Yes, Professor is "highly effective" but think twice before you use "thought provoking." U Chicago turns out "highly effective" PhDs, those that are highly disciplinarily embodied. Professor bears UC trade mark. Also, if you want to climb up the social ladder for a panoramic look at our academic games, do not miss courses by prof or his allies.

Film theories are not facts, but Lowenstein teaches them as such. WHEN you find holes in these theories, don't argue against them or you'll get a C and never be allowed to voice your opinion again. He also doesn't read the essays you turn in. Mostly, you debate pointless ideas which lead nowhere; and Lowenstein never provides conclusions. GOD AWFUL

Adam: I hope you read this some day. Come off of the high horse and try to help people instead of throwing assignments at them. You would think that with the subject matter, you expect something incredibly advanced. How about being less ambiguity with the assignents and reading some papers, the only substantial grade, before turning them in?
