Comment:
It was not the easiest class, but it actually drastically changed the way I write. I actually feel it was life changing. It was the poetry workshop class and even though it took up entire weekends, it became my passion to go. I loved everything about the class, except she doesn't use technology much, so sometimes the assignments were unclear.

Maria changed my entire life, my entire creative focus, and turned me from a frustrated fiction writer into a published poet inside of one semester. If you love formalism, this is not the place for you. If you love honesty and want to truly develop your own voice (rather than learning how to write like someone else), then this class is perfect.

Maria is the epitome of class and the most involved and genuine professors I have ever met. As successful as she is as an author, she is humble and inspiring. she truly cares about the student, and encourages us to be emotionally invested in their work as she is. She doesn't impose her knowledge, she just asks for everyone to write freely.

I love Maria! Her weekend poetry course was inspiring and supportive. My only complaint is that we did not receive enough constructive criticism. However, maybe she believes that encouragement can foster creativity more than judgment... and after finding myself with a surprising body of work after the course, I might have to agree.

I rated Prof. Gillan 4 (Easiness) w/a heavy heart. I should have rated 2 or one, but let me explain: She compels her students to enter poems with a willingness to break through barriers/chains/walls/fear/shame/lack of confidence. Day one. Tough!!! I appreciate that she tells us in the beginning what she expects (for her students to write honestly).

Comment:
I came into Professor Gillan's poetry workshop with little confidence and left the workshop not only with a new outlook on writing, but a deep respect for this remarkable woman. Class allows for growth in writing by taking a closer look at the many relationships that make up the "individual." Be prepared to laugh, cry, and learn about yourself.

Dedicated not only to her craft (poetry), but to using it as a vehicle for truth. I first studied with her as a freshman, and although at the time I found her to be tough, it was thanks to her guidance that my work evolved - to the point where I was accepted into one of the country's top CW programs for this fall. She rocks.

Maria took me under her wing as a sophomore student and mentored me all through my three years at Binghamton. If you have any passion for the art of poetry and are willing to go places you have not before, Maria is a great person to study with. This fall I will be at a top program for poetry and I wouldn't have done it without her.

She's the most dishonest prof. I 've ever taken. Workshops ( which meet once every 3 weeks on the weekend!) are ridiculous. There's no attention to craft, it's just how do you feel! Want an easy A- ok,but if it's poetry you care about then stay away.

Easy course as long as you do your work and get into writing. She is an absolutely amazing person, more like a friend than a teacher. She is an amazing writer and really inspires her students.
