She is very passionate about her field of work, as she lived through many events in Chicano history. She is a tough grader, very particular about notes. There are weekly quizzes. For midterm/final, you can choose to write an essay or take exam. If you have good notes, you take exams in groups. You read 3 books. She has very interesting stories!!!!!

During lectures she is nice and will answer any questions you have on lectures and readings. However, when it comes to office hours to ask questions on papers or things you got wrong on tests she will not tell you how to improve, she'll just tell you everything you did wrong. I'd recommend ALWAYS taking the tests over her essays (hard grader).

It is true that we should cover the issues that are germane to survival in a changing world, whether they affect the Chicano people or not. Making the transition from the rural peasant class to the urban working class has not been easy for any of us. But this seems to be a taboo topic for this prof. Live and learn!

Be fair! She teaches and returns the papers timely. It's inaccurate that she has distanced herself from the Chicano people. It'd be useful however to cover issues on the transition that lower class people make when they move to the professional middle class. Overcoming the family and educational background (w / o shame) is the major challenge.

By far one of the best courses I have taken at State and Dr. Del Castillo is an amazing professor. She genuinely cares about her students. Granted, there is a lot of reading and assignments to reflect you're understanding the readings, but that's exactly how you learn. PS. She's a trailblazer in the Chicano Movement. Google her. Take her!

The way she gives extra credit is pretty strange, but you can try and see what's gonna happen. The class is not about the struggles of the Chicano people but about how she is above the issues that bother for having to teach a class to Chicanos. Why do you need a degree in this program if you don't want to be part of the crowd?

Says she offers extra credit, but only offered 5 points throughout the entire semester where the total points possible in the score was 1000. Just like with a lot of these types of classes, the material can be very subjective at times and you have to write exactly what she wants or else she'll rip you hard for it when it comes to your grade

I went numerous times to her office hours & consulted her after class so I could get help, but when it came time for the actual exam/essay she told me 'you should've done___' She says she offers extra credit, when I asked for it she said no. I asked for help she told me I should've understood better... Duh, that's why I asked for clarification!

She's a nice professor & was clear in her lectures. However, she is a bit of a harsh grader. Exams are all are open note & you are given the option to take exams in groups but she is very specific in the way she wants things answered. If you miss a couple of words in your sentences for the purpose of shortening your answers points WILL BE DEDUCTED!

Don't be scared by the tags- the class is pretty simple! You read 4 super cheap books but they're interesting. Take good notes and you'll take the exams in a group, open note! Take poor notes and it's still open book, alone. Easy quizzes on the readings every week! The lectures are sometimes hard to sit through- but take good notes there too!

This class is easy &tricky at the same time. As long as you read you'll do fine. The readings are not boring, but on the downside, she is selfish and mean! If you want to be in a class where the teacher is babysitting you for every little thing you do like in high school, be my guest. She has such a bad attitude and doesn't listen to her students

QUIZZES AND EXAMS ARE REALLY HARD AND TRICKY. READING OF THE 4 BOOKS ARE EXTREMELY MANDATORY TO GET GOOD GRADES. EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE TEACHER, TAKE HER IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN LEARNING ABOUT CHICANO STUDIES. WOULD TAKE HER AGAIN!

She is a really nice teacher. Talk to her after class and she will really explain concepts you didn't understand. Super Sweet professor. She gives extra credit for each day you attend class which is a huge BONUS! The only bad thing is that you have to read weekly in order to do well in her weekly quizzes. If you read, you'll easily pass. TAKE NOTES

A difficult grader in her first exam. Take the readings and lectures seriously. She has weekly quizzes on the reading so DO THE READING! SHe gives the options to do papers instead of exams and I earned perfect scores. Regurgitate what she lectures in class and you'll do well. She is difficult but you learn a lot. She has GREAT personal anecdotes!

If you do the reading and take good notes then you will get at least a B. She's actually really nice, but doesn't tolerate people being rude. Just do the work and it's an easy class.

Grades extremely fair. Take her group exams. Taking notes on the reading assignments sucks but she grades her tests fill-in answers on an all or nothing basis. Trust me without the group exam you will not do well.
