RUN. Worst teacher I have ever had, and that is after a semester of helquist. Grading is 100% tests. Unless you hate yourself, RUN RUN RUN AWAY.

Was a difficult class managed to get an A by studying my B off. Pulled a hundred on the final, still don't know how. Herlinger is a good professor, but you have to play close attention, see him one on one and do all the practice problems to full understanding.

No the best lecturer. His lectures were read from microsoft word which made it really boring. I had to teach myself everything. Do not take if you actually want to learn chemistry.

Take my advice! If you arent good at or interested in Chemistry, DO NOT take him. He gives no homework grades and the only grades are exams and quizzes. Hes very boring and old-fashioned in lecture. Hard to learn from. Hes a very nice guy, but dont be fooled. Exams are all multiple choice and difficult if you cant memorize and understand equations.

He cannot teach to a class, but is much better 1 on 1. If you don't understand something, it is a necessity to go ask him. There is no leniency with Al. You either do well on the tests and the final and get an A or you don't. He drops one test if you did better on a final. You must be good at Chem to do well in this class.

DON'T TAKE HIM. I mean he's a really nice guy and really willing to help, but his lectures are terribly boring. He ever lectures during discussion time. Sure we had homework in the book but I sure as hell didnt do them, and I dont think anyone else did either. I guess it was optional. If you have the opportunity to take 101, DO IT.

Herlinger's lectures are incomprehensible and his handwriting is illegible. I hadn't taken AP CHEM so I was so lost for the whole semester. There are 5 tests, and grades are based solely on tests and lab work. If you are not a chem major or haven't taken AP CHEM don't take Herlinger.

He's a very challenging professor. He only teaches by lecture, and he uses an overhead. His lessons aren't easy to understand. Everything I learned in this class I taught myself. Read the book, do the study problems, and go to review sessions. Very nice man, but very difficult.

Learned 95% from book, lectures are boring overheads, not helpful. Terms are defined but he never goes over more than one example or how to apply anything. Really nice but not good at teaching. 5 exams, 1 final. Drops lowest score. Exams are difficult, no study guide given. Lab section connected to course and counts from 150/750 of total grade

Teaches by setting up an overhead and talking for 2.5 hours on T, TH. He will not really teach you in class so it is on the student to learn outside. His tests are multiple choice and the answers you get if you make small errors are there too. 1/2 of my class had below a 50% at semester end. DONT TAKE!! Take CHEM 101 instead.

Very nice old man that seems to truly enjoy helping his students learn chemistry. However, his tests are very difficult and his lectures are super boring and it is hard to comprehend what he is saying. If you didn't take AP Chem, read the book, do all of the practice problems, and buy the student guide and do the practice tests.

Professor H is a good professor at heart, although he cannot teach the material. He goes off topic, makes problems 20 times harder than they should be, and in lecture is extremely boring.

To anyone who will end up taking his class here is the best advice to get above a B-: do the practice problems he assigns from your book(given on first day for ALL the problems) for every chapter, read the book before his lectures as they seem to not relate that well unless you read ahead, and lastly STUDY ALOT. Most work I had to put in for a B :(

Very hard tests and quizzes, you HAVE to memorize all equations as non are provided. And as there are about 3-5 chapters covered per test one equation forgotten usually drops you a letter grade. :( Was fun to use his class on certain days to see how long you could go without sleeping(I lost twice). Have fun with him and I'm glad its over with.

Dr. Herlinger is one the most helpful professors at Loyola. He will go out of his way to make sure you understand the material if you go to his office hours. His lectures need to be memorized as he covers topics not in the book and HIS TESTS ARE INSANELY DIFFICULT. Quizzes are manageable, but exams will ALWAYS have the exception to the rules.

Incoming chem major, good luck. Lectures are extremely boring which is why you have people ditching all the time. If you do happen to attend a lecture you find yourself day dreaming or getting on your laptop. Chemistry should be fun, sadly he doesn't make it :( He's sexy though, I gotta give him that.

idk why he's getting good ratings. difficult to follw & test & quizzes are horrible. he's very old school in his grading. no hw points, no curving, no ec. he's a sweet old man but needs to stop putting the most difficult questions on his test & get angry when u don't finish in time. non chemistry people def want to avoid him.

Super great professor! If you can take him over the summer--DO IT! You will work very hard & may fail & many students drop out, but if you take the time to get to know Al and go to class you can get a good grade & learn a lot! Take him, he is awesome & has the whole hot professor thing going on! :)
