I took two semesters of chemistry with Dr. Bates in 1978 as a nursing student and did extremely well, plus an elective class! He was interesting with a great sense of humor and I definitely learner alot from him. In fact, I never had chemistry in high school, and he made it so simple! Today I am a college professor, thanks Dr. Bates!

I had Dr. Bates for all sorts of classes. Just because he does not hold your hand does name make him a "clown" as the last comment suggests. He knows the material inside and out and is willing to help his students. He has expectations from his students. Too many teachers nowadays dont. You actually HAD to LEARN to pass his class.

I had this clown and his wife over ten years ago. I couldn't believe a relative when he told me that they were still there. Both are a disgrace to the profession. I have my Master's degree now (how do you like them apples Bates?). Their intellectual vanity does little to conceal their moral bankruptcy. Yes, I do hold a grudge.

Professor Bates is honestly the best. Not only does he know his stuff, but he's fun to be around and makes the craziest analogies. When you take him, you'll know what I mean lol

he is a really nice guy but seriously lacks teaching skills. sometimes he has a point to his rants, but most of the time he just rants about history and current events. he doesn't usually have anything useful planned for class, and might kill you because he likes to bring deadly chemicals and poisonous gasses to class. grades are scaled though.

I would rather saw off my right arm than take another chem class with this teacher. Some demonstrations are interesting. Don't take this class if you did not take AP chem in high school.

LOVES to ramble on about random things. Difficult to follow in class. You definitely need to WORK in this class. But Bates really cares about his students and is ALWAYS available to help outside of class. Make sure you ask questions and go to him if you need help, and you should have no trouble at all.

If you want to pass organic chem, Bates is your best bet my far. The class is pretty difficult but he truly cares about his students. He can be a bit condescending at times. I'd recommend Bates to anyone who is a science major.

Worst teacher I have had by far. Can't stay on ANY topic, is condesending, and uses useless analogies. Unless YOU KNOW HOW TO DO CHEM... do not take this class... on the positive side he does experients in class.

He cares about what he teaches and his students, but unless you can really TEACH YOURSELF to handle very advanced chemistry, I'd beware. He doesn't teach. He gives you an answer sheet, and you have your text book. Learn from that, if you can. He rambles WAY too much. I spent a long time wondering when he was going to start teaching...never happened

I had to drop this class, however, I really enjoyed Dr. Bate's lectures. He is a good guy who is willing to help his students. If you have trouble taking timed tests, he will let you take an "untimed" test. He is difficult to understand, but what he losses in clarity he makes up for in "genuien concern for his students." Dr. Bates = Worth a try!

Bates....great class, "bu bu bu bu but" if your not a science major you may want to go elsewhere. This class is fairly difficult but manageable if you pay attention and work hard. I had very little knowledge of chemistry before 155 and I passed with an A-. Bates does ramble on, but in the end he's just trying to prepare you for the future.

In the words of Monty Python and the Holy Grail: Donum eis requiem *slam* He rambles on and on, tries to psychoanalyze you and asks you if you have medical problems he should know about (which he then tells the class about) AVOID AVOID!!! Danger will robinson.
