Alan is an absolute hero. Huge network, very kind, gets to know everyone personally. He is always willing to go out of his way to help teams and has a quirky sense of humor. Very genuine and knowledgeable. Just make sure you're passionate and have a good group since you'll be with them for 6 months. I'd say avoid doing food, it can be forgettable.

Comment:
Alan's kind of an odd cat among the professors at UW. He tends to judge things holistically and adapts his classes on the fly to suit his needs. Despite this, there's a definite method to his madness. If you're there to coast, you'll get roasted, but if you put in the effort, Alan's classes are arguably the best way in Foster to learn and network.

He is a cool, quirky professor that expects you to get out of your comfort zone. Take notes of everything, and it is a great environment to meet new friends while networking with Alan's speakers and other connections. His class inspired me to apply for the UW Entrepreneurship minor! OPEN TO ALL MAJORS.

Alan is a very unusual professor. You really don't learn a whole lot in class as this is mostly done on your own time and at his office hours. He brings in really cool guest speakers. He doesn't grade assignments until the very end and there are not many throughout the class. You HAVE to come to class and participate every time in order to do well.

This class: Amazing, you will not believe the quality of the "screening report" you'll be able to write after the class finishes. You'll get in touch with a lot of different businesses and learn about them! Exciting. Alan: He won't lecture you much, but will always provide resource for you! Very caring man, he'll be the best thing for you at UW

The creating company class as a whole: Amazing experience, you learn so much about starting a business and you'll see significant personal growth from this! Don't be afraid of it being hard, you'll have unlimited resources to help you! Alan: He's the most caring man, though the class structure is quite free, alan is always there to help you!

He rarely lectured and the lectures that were given didn't form a coherent theme. I did well on the exams and worked my ass off on the final presentation and still got a terrible grade in the course. I think he could do a better job of communicating what's expected in the final presentation.

Alan is dedicated to serving his students, he will give you 100% support. He doesn't do textbook lectures but likes to be a facilitator (as educators should be!). For those of you people who say he plays favorites: ITS TRUE! However he's super approachable and if you can't get him to like you have no one to blame but yourself.

Life changing. Its not about the grade you will get on a test or assignment, its about life people! He really nails it, its about what are you going to do with your life. The resources he gives you makes it easy to figure your life out. Its much more then a class.

Alan is an AWESOME professor!! He has a unique teaching style that keep the class interesting and fun. He believes that you should not take a class that you can learn from a book. I completely agree with him! He makes class fun by bring in guest speakers every class and having them tell the class about their business experiences. Super fun and EASY

Didn't know what to expect coming into the class, and was at first thrown off by his different teaching style. But it became one of my favorite classes, and he gave a wonderful introduction to the world of entrepreneurship. His projects were a lot of fun to do, and don't necessarily require a great amount of time outside of class.

On the - side: his book is nowhere near adequate and poorly written. he's not very helpful, loves being fawned over. Definitely plays favorites and mind games, as one user noted. also, it's a big s@it pile of work (6-8 X average). on the + side: he does seem to care about what he's doing. he organized a great group of speakers worth checking out.

I have taken 3 classes from Alan. He is such a great prof who thinks outside the box to get students interested. His classes are always frontloaded so you do the big stuff upfront and then get a nice break at the end of the quarter when other classes have final projects.

Avoid if you like structure. Take if like ambiguity. Mkts himself by ?great? prof'l contacts but aren?t that impressive. His lectures improvised. It's apparent no effort put in lesson plans. Alan plays mind games w/ students & makes them doubt their choice in majors. Be guarded (he loves to gossip) and take what he says with a grain a salt.

This guy has an amazing ability to draw talant into his classroom. In one quarter I've met more successful business people than most of the people on campus in their lifetime. He's very engauging and passionate. A fair warning: if you always thought of running your own business, but never started, expect reality to slap the hell out of you though.
