Comment:
Here's the advice I wish I had before taking Perreiah: 1. Homework: only reading (10-20 pages) 2. Grade in class is based on one question quiz at the beginning of every class and three essay exams (4-5 questions) 3. 3 exams, no midterm, and final is optional 4. He is a VERY harsh grader 5. You will learn more in office hours than in class

Comment:
Dr. Perreiah is a very tough grader and an old school educator. He expects a lot from his students (understanding some dense readings, scoring well on his daily quizzes, and grades very toughly on his exams) but he really made me feel accomplished to get a good grade in the class.

Had him for Phi 260 (ancient-medieval philosophy) and 345 (Asian philosophy). He is a very demanding professor... but he is trying to cultivate your mind. Everything he will say to you and expect of you is designed so that you may gain knowledge and insights that will remain with you forever--helping to shape you as a thoughtful person.

Comment:
Perreiah is not the best lecturer but if you pay attention and take thorough notes, the three tests should be no problem. I suggest doing all of the reading since there are attendance quizzes every lecture. The final is optional if you are content with your grade.

Allan is a great guy, but you'll learn a lot more from him by sitting in his office asking questions than you'll ever get in his class. He's not a great class-room teacher despite being obviously well-versed in the material. Thinks he gives meaningful exams, but doesn't.

It was a 200 level class but he grades it like a 500. Expects you to have an unrealistic depth of knowledge of several complex issues. Teaches nonsensical ancient philosophies and gets upset when they dont make sense to you. Avoid at all cost.

He's an intelligent fellow, but he's old school. He doesn't seem like he cares about the success of his students. Students who show up will be much better off than those that don't. If you miss a few classes, he will be your worst enemy. He's extremely condescending as well. I do not recommend.

Comment:
A very intelligent, yet very condescending person. He will spend most of class ranting, (usually has nothing to do with the readings, and is very liberal--do not take if you are a republican, which i'm not, but it's still annoying). The actual material covered takes up about 15% of the class. Once, he forgot to review for an exam. BE CAREFUL!

Comment:
Cynical jerk who does nothing but get on his soap box and ridicule the whole class rather than teach the material. Avoid. If you can't, its better to take your chances waiting for the class another semester with a different professor

I am a philosophy major and this class was terrible. I love the material but the professor was pretty much useless. He barely goes over the material and gets upset when no one knows it. DO NOT TAKE HIM. There are many better teachers for the classes he teaches.

Very knowledgeable, but not the best at communicating that knowledge. As mentioned before, he maintains really awkward prolonged eye contact with people, and it gets kind of uncomfortable. Lots of reading, quizzes every single day, but manageable and interesting.

The teacher is decent. He knows the material, he just isn't good at communicating it. He continually goes off on tangents, and usually talks down to students. He also has this odd stare thing he does when he finishes a sentence. I do not recommend his classes, unless you like reading A LOT of philosophical material.

I took this class pass/fail maybe thats why I enjoyed it so much. I was not intrested in the subject prior to the class, but I was engulfed in this completly diffrent way of thinking. granted I did very little work and barley did the reading but the explanations of the readings durning the lecture where so interesting. So interesting and new!

He is probably the worst Philosophy instructor I have had. He knows philosophy well but can't seem to communicate it without multiple tangents in his convoluted lectures. Sometimes he will completely forget about the subject he should be teaching. Read and memorize everything. That is the only way you will get by in his class.

He's an excellent professor. The reading is very difficult and sometimes it can be difficult to pay attention, but if you do, he explains everything, and often repeats his explanations in several different ways in case you didn't get it the first time. I learned so much from this class. Great teacher.

He's okay. What can I say, it's philosophy. Exams are kind of hard. He tells you not to memorize the information, but that's the only way I could pass the tests. I found myself wondering off a lot, so I started taping the lectures-which was quite helpful. He likes the class to participate in discussions.

important to do readings. kind of harder to take from AH background because its very phi based. if you're not into conceptual/theoretical dont take. outline each reading w main points and memorize them, its pretty easy to get A on test. dont overanalyze while studying. encourages class discussion. very sympathetic if you go to him with an issue.
