Comment:
Hinton's class is very engaging! He encourages his students to critically deconstruct notions of genocide. What I enjoyed most, is the interdisciplinary element of this course. The cases that we cover can be examined from the perspectives of anthropology , sociology, politics and/or psychology. If you want to be challenged, do take him!

This professor doesn't give you an easy street to an A. You actually have to earn it. He has so much to offer and it beyond willing to help. As a graduate student, Professor Hinton has change my education and career path.

If you just want to take a class to slide through grad school without trying DO NOT take his class, and maybe look at yourself a little harder to see if you should even be in grad school. If you are really interested in genocide, want to work hard and learn a lot, then take his course. World renown scholar with a lot to offer if you just ask him!

Look: Hinton is the typical graduate school professor. He will expect a lot and if you don't perform, you will be penalized. Do not take this class if you want an easy A course. This is a research-based course. If you do the reading and bring something to the table, you'll do well. I really dislike the Reading Diary he makes you write though.

I love professor Hinton! He is famous for a reason, people. One of the few profs who does not dumb down the class. I'm *so sorry* these lazy idiots feel angry at him when it is their own fault that they don't read. Want a free diploma from Rutgers? Look elsewhere. If you READ and participate in class, he respects you and he teaches to you.

I had him for a graduate course and he is the most condescending professor I've had yet. He is not a proponent of students, he only likes to tell you when you're wrong. His grades are arbitrarily determined (he grades essays based on a style rubric...) and he is not open to differing opinions. Too bad. The subject material was interesting...

This guy is a jerk as most people have already said. He is very boring and does not teach anthing. Don't take him cos he is not good. All he does is underlines the list of attendance and deducts a point from the overall participation. He is useless!

The only + ratings here were probly written by Hinton. That is sad. The readings are interesting, but the guy does not teach. His grading method is not clear. He lacks much willingness to teach and his class is too politicized with a socialist slant. He puts people down who disagree with them. He should stop teaching and just research. AVOID AVOID!

I took the same grad class that these other people commented on. First of all, more than half of the class proved themsevels to be idiots b/c they are in grad school but they don't want to read. Seriously, stop complaining you spoiled brats. This prof. is brilliant. What I liked best was he DID NOT dumb down his class to make lazy people happy.

This was the most painful experience of my life. The arrogant guy does NOT teach. The entire class was based on student presentations - we each had at least 2- which often took the whole period. He, however, sat in the back of the class with his legs spread open and did not teach at all. Total waste of tuition.

the class was unbearable. the teacher was absolute and unrelenting with his personal views. everyone hated each lecture and because the teaching style was less "talking to" students and more "talking at" them. waste of time, and tuition, and a real waste of intellectual focus. i'd advise against taking this proffessor under any circumstance.

Worst class ever. Never gave out a gade till the last day of class when he handed everything back. Just sat in a circle and answered your question with a question. Never laid the groundwork out for what anthropology is and the objectives. And the reading journals took forever and were pointless.

Took cultural anthro course years ago because I had to. Was very confused in class, and he expects you to read alot, but the readings were not exactly pointless. Quite challenging professor, but take things too personal. Not very recommended, but you'll pass if you do ok on the papers. LOTS of papers, did not had exams.

I had him for one graduate class - NONE of us were happy because he didn't teach! He would just sit back, give us tons to read and then would expect us to talk about it and he would not even give one sentence of lecture or real feedback. True waste of time and the class was a joke. We had to look up word definitions in a globalization class.

He is not very clear and wants you to answer his questions exactly to his liking. He assigns a lot of reading and you have to be interested in the material to like reading this stuff or else you won't even be able to force yourself to read it.
