One time she wrote Pee Wee Herman on the board instead of Pee Wee King. What a priceless moment when she got something wrong. Everyone was so afraid of her to point out the obvious error. If she would show some compassion, she would get some compassion from me. I was always prepared, unlike others who were cut down to size.

One of the most challenging professors at St. Olaf. Don't worry, this is a good thing! You will learn SO much because she does want you to do well and fall in love with music history. Very inspiring. Good luck on the tests... Don't get hung up on the letter you get after the class because any class with Alice is well worth the struggle.

Comment:

Insane and Love are two words I can express about this woman. She's an EXTREMELY COMPASSIONATE...the best teacher the music department has hands down. She's tough but just be prepared and you'll be fine. Office hours are great, she's extremely different outside of class. One of the most loving teachers, she wants you to learn!

Two words: Tough Love. If you come in with the right attitude you won't just learn something, you'll come out transformed. Take her up on office hours if you're struggling. She's a different person when you work with her one-on-one. Probably the most compassionate teacher at Olaf.

A friend of mine asked her to write letters of recommendation to graduate schools. She found out accidentally that Professor Hanson was putting her down in these letters, rather than recommending her. I find this extremely unethical- if you don't want to recommend a student, don't agree to write a letter for them.

While her classes are the hardest I've taken and she's extremely loud, you learn so much. She's made me a better student. If you actually take the time to talk to her, she's very sweet and I think she honestly cares for every student. Yes, sometimes her opinions are a little crazy, but it definitely gets the facts stuck in your head.

I had Alice for American Music, and I think she's fantastic. She really does want her students to succeed, and she gives you everything you need. Just keep up in class, and do as she says. Yes, sometimes she is wrong. Let her have her way--you can prove her wrong when you've got students of your own.

Dr. Alice Hanson is losing it. For American Music History she has lost all respect for her students and mocks their intelligence daily. The bibliography projects and the initial quizes are just opportunities for her to embarass and humiliate one and all who end up taking that class.

Her classes were hard, but when I strove to keep up with the volume of information she'd passionately put out, I learned a lot of music history. She always showed her high interest in music history, was animated, and tried to make the subject interesting. I found her a bit intense but admired her knowledge and creative ways of communicating history

Yes, sex in every lecture, but it was one of the things that kept me laughing and enjoying making fun of her and the class. She knows a lot, you will learn EVERYTHING, but do not take one of her classes unless you are a music major. I mean, you can, I did and got an A, but... be ready to work!

I am mildly obsessed with Alice Hanson, she has a bit of a cult following. She's so much fun to watch in class, and she knows SO much stuff. She really LOVES music history and just wants you to know it. Tests and papers can be sometimes insanely hard, but it feels so good when you pull down a good grade on one of them.

She's the best professor ever! I loved her in 242 and 344, but dang if she doesn't make you work. WHOoo! Paper writing is intese and highly highly scrutinized! and you can't ever miss class! But she's fantastic!

VERY VERY VERY difficult, and won't budge on deadlines. A bit of a "bedtime" mind - manages to weave sex into nearly every lecture. Still, she is an excellent prof, and really makes you work, but makes sure you know what she expects from you.

I LOVE Alice. She is incredibly difficult, but that's because she really knows her stuff and wants you to know it too - I learned so much from her. She is also very clear about what she wants on tests and papers.
