Comment:

Dr Allen Barnes is one of the most egocentric people I've ever met. He constantly demeans and belittles students within his class. I don't think I've ever felt more upset about a particular class/professor ever before. In addition to Dr. Barnes not showing any empathy he severely docked us for material NOT COVERED IN CLASS. I would't recommend.

Comment:

I took this class online and was very frustrated throughout the entire semester. Dr. Barnes is very adamant at the beginning to make sure that students work out tech issues before the course gets too intensive, however he himself struggled to post videos that were mandatory and had embedded quizzes on time and functioning properly. Also, he's rude.

He's really unreasonable when it comes to grading. He'll take points off for anything. He's obnoxious and loud when he's giving lectures. Pop quizzes after chapters. He does the most for just a A110 course.

Do not take this class . I cannot understand the reason why UAA is keeping Barnes as a teacher. He is very confusing teacher, innappriate, he is bully. He makes you feel stressed, not motivated. I wish UAA have more options for A330 with professional teachers ! Do not take this class OR any class with Barnes! You will regreat it!

I took Dr. Barnes for A110 back in 2014 and it was one of the worst class ever. I ended up discontinuing his class and retook it with a different professor. I later took his online JUST251 and I will never again take any of his class. To be able to pass his class you HAVE to pay close attention, extra close if online.

I can truly say from experience that the people who do not like this teacher are either 1. too stupid to understand how he illustrates concepts or not willing to pay attention during lecture or 2. so conservative that they do not listen to anything he says. He is very obviously liberal, but his lectures are incredibly interesting. Take his class.

Barns is definitely something else. Although he is a little weird and inappropriate he is an excellent professor. His classes are challenging, don't take him if you don't plan on learning. He will make you get out of your comfort zone and view everything in a new perspective. I have taken him 3 times and have learned so much!

Most confusing prof. out there. I did not enjoy this class and I'm pretty sure it's impossible to receive an A in this class. He grades assignments however he wants without a clear explanation as to how he came up with that grade. Almost every class he makes people stand up in front of the class and talk about the class book. Good luck...

I liked his class for the first few weeks. The first test was easy IF you studied and did notecards from his presentations and book. But for every other test, he would find random sentences from the chapters and test you. You have to study. ALSO each test is 100 question. final is 200 questions! not always clear during lectures. Pop quizzes online.

Comment:

Didn't particularly enjoy this professor. He enjoyed being sarcastic and profane, which was funny most of the time. However, being an older gentlemen, he did have some old-fashioned ideas about things and didn't think twice about frequent chauvinis and stereotyping comments. He also frequently and unnecessarily brought politics into the lectures.

365 Comparative Justice Systems: This class would be a lot more interesting with a different professor. All you do is pointless group work. You have a final project that is due at the end of the semester. The syllabus does not help you explain to do on the assignments or the final paper/project. if you dont care for pointless lectures. don't take.

330 justice and Society: He runs this class like a phil. Class. The books he assigns are confusing. His grading criteria is a joke. During group work he would say good job to one thing and turn around and say the exact opposite on the sheet. If you cant stand confusing or reading books that don't make sense, do not take this class with Barnes.

Lectures veer so far off topic you spend more time trying to figure out how it even applies to the class. His lectures reflect very little of what is actually on the tests. My advice, make friends with someone who took his class previously and figure out what you need to focus on. Test material and lecture material didn't seem to match up at all.

Comment:

Dr. Barnes teaches his upper division courses with group discussions of the material. This works out well in some settings and poorly in others, particularly if you are in a horrible group. He is willing to help students go through the material and his anecdotal lectures, while sometimes off-topic, are normally worthwhile. I recommend taking him.

I enjoyed his class. If you show up and show you want to learn he is willing to work with you. I missed a test and informed him prior to missing it and he let me make it up in the justice center. The pop quiz are all online through black board and help boost up your test scores.

Tests are pretty hard. He doesn't give them back so you don't know what you got wrong. Tells a lot of stories about his life and gets off track often. Rushes through the slides at the end because he doesn't keep up with his syllabus. Use the study guide website it helps a lot.

Since I'm a justice major I had to take this. I was actually happy to take this class but he rants about his life. I explain him as a horny old white guy.I do like that he explains and gives many examples if you don't understand a topic. Read the book and do some notes in class. SHOW UP FOR TESTS!!!
