The material of the course is AMAZING!! But the prof has a large ego and doesn't really explore the material... such a shame because the material is sooo good...

Allan is a phenomenal human being who is very caring. He gives his students a chance to tailor their learning to their interests, while challenging their core assumptions. The class I took was challenging in the best possible way.

Very salty. Teaches in the dark in front of the slides. Makes no effort to lecture, just speaks really quickly listing off facts about each image. Gets personally mad at the class for not doing well on exams. However, assignments are easy & expose you to contemporary indigenous cultures, great experience since this isn't taught enough

He's a decent prof and the material's relatively interesting, but his obsession with native culture is a little weird and inappropriate. I've taken other indigenous studies classes with profs who were more respectful in the way they taught. He needs to tone it down a bit and realize he doesn't have to pretend to be native to teach the class.

Really enjoyed this class. He is passionate in what he teaches and gives clear lecture material. He passes around a lot of cool objects related to our course material which is great fun and hands on. At the end of our term a lot of students in my class commented on how much they enjoyed the course and would definitely take one of his courses again!

Definitely one of my favourite profs, but from what I have experienced, he isn't for everyone. Very passionate and thoughtful, makes a ton of references to who he has metwhat he has done. I would only suggest taking a class of his if you are truly interested in that subject. Be prepared for some sort of creative personal reflection...

Allan is a great professor that loves his work and students. He is not egotistical at all but rather feels like a stranger in a strange land, so he over compensates. His knowledge is impressive and he is always there when you uneed him. Awesome prof!

I was excited to take this course, but Allan Ryne is very monotone and boring. I did not like his lectures at all. He is egotistic and loves talk about himself and showing his pictures with his friends. He is not knowledgeable enough for this course and nor organized. He is not clear about assignment and has no passion for this subject at all.

I was excited to take this course and then I found out that it is very dry and boring. Allan Ryan is monotone and I did not like going to his lectures. He marks way too hard for a art history course.

Fair teacher, little grumpy, found he taught more of a hist/anthro course that included some images rather than an art history course with visual analysis. Lots of slides. Constantly references who he has met/knows and shows lots of movies in lectures. Would have taken a different course.

Allan Ryan has a HUGE ego and loves to talk about himself and who he knows. I think this ego gets in the way of him being a good teacher, which he would be if he realized that it's not all about him.

A passionate and knowledgeable professor, he is informed on issues surrounding Indigenous peoples and successfully integrates them into historical and contemporary art. While he is not always explicit about assignment expectations, if addressed, he is more than happy to clarify. He is a fair marker and an engaging professor!

very selective of the readings and movies. Class needed more Adam Beach films. Only reason I went to class was because he was spicy hot, and attendance was mandatory. He is quite good with extensions though...Same discussion each week, and I don't think I'll ever use the knowledge I gained in his class again in my life.

An amazing teacher. He goes outside of the typical 'art historian' paradigm and engages the students in looking at art, and issues, from an indigenous perspective. Great course, great prof.
