Nice guy, kind of clueless. Just gets up and talks for an hour, but you definately dono't need to go to class. Just read the book and go to section and you'll be fine. Don't expect much personal contact either.

Kelley is knowledgeable, but he apparently cannot teach big classes. He can be a really good seminar instructor but not a good Econ 1D instructor. The class was not hard, and basically the textbook was way more important than the lectures.

Comment:
If you don't have a natural aptitude for economics, this class is going to suck. The professor was unhelpful, and left pretty much everything for his TAs to do. His lectures were boring and often did not coincide with the readings or what was going to be on the next test. I strongly advise not to take this class from him.

Very boring, and his lectures had no structure. Incredibly knowledgeable, but tough class overall.

At first I thought Kelley was really nice, but then I realized he sucked hardcore at teaching. Luckily he won't be teaching this course anymore. I think his seminars are better because he actually likes those subjects and has done major research in demography. His tests are really confusing, though and the TAs don't know what's on them.

Very knowledgable and honestly excited by economics. His lectures have very little bearing on the tests, so as long as you read the book you can basically skip every lecture. Good teacher, I recommend him if you might be interested in economics

This class is over 300 students in a lecture setting, so it is difficult to communicate with Professor Kelley. His lectures are clear and helpful, and the tests (especially the final) aren't too difficult. I would recommend Kelley if you want to take this course.

Very knowledgable!! Tries to focus on concepts in lectures rather than definitions. Jumps from 1 topic to another while explaining which makes him kinda hard to follow, but overall his class is decent.

Not the best lecturer, and the tests are hard. Prof. Kelley also gives the TAs most of the power, and he's not very accessible. I would not take this class.

The class is pretty hard... his lectures go way ahead of the reading assigned for the week so a lot of people get lost or don't bother going to class. If you study a LOT and do all the reading you should be fine though.

I LOVE him. He's a badass old man who drives an M3 and advised the World Bank. What more could you ask for in an econ professor? If you like economics, you will love Dr. Kelley.

The class is very hard. There are no tests, but it is the equivalent of writing a theisis in one semester. You must always keep in contact with Kelley through indpendent meettings. If you get him to like you, you will excel. If you don;t, you're in trouble

Good but not great teacher. I think he catches a lot of flack because this is the 1st econ class one takes at Duke and a lot of kids realize mid-way through that they don't like economics. If you attend Macronews and read the book it's fairly easy.
