Rotter is one of the best lecturers at Colgate. He knows how to convey material in an interesting and illuminating way. The readings were manageable and his papers were challenging but he is open to other perspectives and gives great feedback. He genuinely cares about his students and is great in office hours. One of the best in the department!

His lectures are like Nat. Geo. episodes-he is incredible! The books for the course are dense, get ready to read a lot every night. You might be able to get by without reading as long as you're attentive in lecture, I wouldn't try it though. Also get ready to take notes for the full class period. It's intense, but interesting. Papers are tough.

Comment:
GREAT professor, he has very well organized lectures and it is very easy to follow, although he does talk fast. Definitely need to do the readings, but they are manageable. Paper topics are a little out there but if you put in the effort he will recognize it. Definitely take a class with him if you can, one of the best in the department!

Comment:
Rotter is hands-down the best lecturer I've ever had. He demands excellence; those not capable of writing and saying smart, constructive things will struggle mightily. But for bright students interested in American foreign relations or American history in general, HIST 215 is a wonderful course. To have missed out on it would have been tragic.

Comment:
I like Professor Rotter, but he is full of himself and thinks folks can operate on the same level that he does - which you can't because he is very high-functioning. He is an EXTREMELY difficult grader, but he doesn't want your best, he wants the best. He will work with you, but you have to meet him at 75%, not 50%. That said, an AMAZING lecturer.

Comment:
This professor is truly awful. The fact that he has received so many phenomenal reviews is astounding. Not only does he assign books/reading that is simply not used for any of the assessments that he assigns the class; he is not a friendly guy, does not want his students to succeed and does not help AT ALL in office hours. STAY AWAY

By far the best professor I've ever had at Colgate. His lectures were intimidatingly good, the books we read were clear, thoughtful and provoking, and while he was a tough grader, he wants nothing more than for students to think and write clearly. I declared history as my major with him as a result of his class. A really wonderful person.

Had him for American Foreign Policy. His lectures are captivating and he narrates them so well its like listening to a book on tape. Comes across as a really smart guy. Not a history major but I really dig this class. I advise keeping up with his readings, which are manageable. Papers are easy. Exams are one essay question and kind of difficult.

Comment:
His lectures are very boring. He basically writes them down and reads them like a book. He's not a very likable guy. He's a huge narcissist and loves hearing himself talk. I wouldn't really recommend the class, even though this subject is very interesting, he makes it a real bore.

Professor Rotter's class was very difficult, but I learned so much about the subject that it was worth it. He is very helpful and was always available to talk about the subject matter and upcoming assignments. Although I was a little disappointed with my grade, I felt that what I learned about the subject matter was very valuable.

His lectures are really good, although you do need to complete some of the reading to do well on papers and exams. He's also pretty open to different perspectives, so long as you support them well. Take this class if you can!

Was not a History or IR major and did not do as much of the reading as I should have, but I still got an A-. Presentation is extremely structured, which it makes it easy to study for exams. Put the effort into the papers like they deserve and participate in the discussion classes and you will be golden

unless your a great writer (in terms of both content and writing style), and/or do ALL the reading assignments, there is little chance you'll get an A. However, Rotter is a great lecturer, and interesting teacher with a different perspective of American history and i would reccomend him for that
