I would take professor Harsin every semester if I could. She knows so much about the material and she lectures as if telling a story rather than teaching. Doing the readings are important so you can participate in the discussions but as long as you study the exams are super easy.

Comment:

Professor Harsin is one of the best professors I've had at Colgate. I am not a history major at the moment, but I am definitely considering to minor in history after her class. She grades you knowing that you put a lot of effort into the course, and it is not just lectures in class. We have watched movies and there isn't too much focus on books

Harsin is wonderful, her lectures were interesting and the discussion was incredibly productive and helpful, there was a ton of reading involved but it was usually interesting. READ IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE. Tests were straightforward, essays weren't too bad, I ended up doing better than I expected. tldr: I love her

I knew I wasn't going to do amazing because Harsin holds you to history major level for work. Class lecture was amazingly interesting, but readings weren't as mandatory as other classes and you could get by with articles alone. I wish I had taken advantage of her offers to review papers 3 days before. Exams were long and mostly essay questions.

Tremendously sweet and incredibly smart. Most classes were (really interesting) lectures, not a lot of nightly homework, but all the papers required a decent amount of research/reading/preparation in order to score decently. Take advantage of her offer to read your draft!

A warm person and a very solid professor. Not a tough class, but also not a walk in the park. VERY interesting stuff, especially the psychology and philosophy! Lots of discussions, which is a plus. Produce good work and contribute in class, and you will be rewarded, but any lackluster work gets what it deserves, too. In conclusion, take this class!

I took Modernity with Prof Harsin and it was a great decision. She's very friendly and always willing to meet with students during her office hours (especially for essays). This semester there are 3 essays, 1 midterm, 1 final... and a good amount of reading, yet it's all reasonable. Also a nice mix of discussion & some lectures so never boring imo.

Prof Harsin is a wonderful professor. She makes everything compelling and interesting and is very easy to work with. She is a tough grader on essays, and you'll read about 6 books in a semester, but the education is completely worth it. This woman is amazing. Highly recommended.

She spends way too much time talking about prostitutes and other things that don't really involve the literature. She doesn't tie anything together and is not an easy grader. Take her if you must, but otherwise stay away. Also, girls will do better than guys in this class.

She is a wonderful lady, and very helpful. However, I would definately not recommend taking her for Modernity. She did not tie together the different works we read, so there was no real focus of the course, and no direction. I didn't really learn much, plus she is a really tough essay grader. But I am sure she would be a great history teacher.

Incredibly nice, she was my FSEM professor and made everything very easy to adjust to and what not. Accommodating in all respects and very clear about the material. Knows everything about the subject and is willing to let the conversation stray if she sees that the class is rambunctious. Kinda a tough grader but I absolutely recommend her

Prof. Harsin knows too much for her own good! She is EXTREMELY knowledgable on the French Rev. but presents so much information during this class that it's hard to know what you need to remember or really grasp the larger picture. Tests weren't bad, easy paper grader, overall nice person but non stop lectures kind of ruin things for me.

GREAT prof. Knows an incredible amount of details, themes, connections. I took a ton of notes in class, but she never really lectured, per se. She just talked and talked and talked. Made an 80-minute class fly by. Really nice person and very accessible.
