Comment:
Don't take a class with professor Howard unless you are willing to work. 1. Write down everything she says 2. Drill it into your mind. You need to remember the artist, years, and everything she says about a painting. You also need to remember time periods and how pieces reflect those time periods. 3. GO TO HER OFFICE. She WILL give you hints!

Avoid Professor Howard for East Asian Art course at all costs. You'll definitely struggle in her class. She is very harsh grader. There are some answers she wants, and there are some answers she doesn't wants, even though both of them are correct. She will take away your exam time because of her meeting with other professors.

Absolutely dreadful. Uses nonsense as a grading rubric and does not wish to help you but rather aims to embarrass you if you receive a C or lower on any quiz. Unorganized. Over the top expectations. Unless the subject is your number 1 life priority you will struggle dealing with this professor.

I had her for East Asian Art. She is very tough with grading and expects you to memorize EVERY detail of each art piece to the tee. For a 200-level class, definitely expects too much from students. I was turned off from East Asian Art, even though I was very eager and interested to learn.

Literally dropped this class (Survey of Japanese Art) after the first day. Could not understand the professor AT ALL, as she is old and talks softly and has a very strong accent. Drones on and on ad nauseum and does not attempt to make the lecture interesting. Avoid at all costs.

I had Prof. Howard for my art history seminar. She was extremely helpful and lenient as to the requirements for the class. I was in complete control of my final paper, and that is what determines your grade. Keep in contact with her, respect her, and take her advice. You will get the A.

Do not take this class expecting a good grade! H In my class of 30 people, 28 students had to re write our last paper because her accent was too thick to understand what she wanted us to write about & she refused to tell us any way but orally.

Its not that its a hard subject, she makes it hard. Study all you want before an exam, but don't expect a good grade. I took good notes, but I turned out to be NOT ok. Gave us a writing assignment, but gave us no specific guidelines until after we handed it in. Working hard and having a positive attitude in this class proved to be pointless.

If you expect easy A and pass the class, she is not for you. If you really want to improve yourself in Art History and learn lot and remember lot, she is the one. Best professor, cares about you, if you show progress, she will definitely give you credit on your final grade. Just she is a high demanding professor.

Took Buddhist Art of Asia and Chinese sculpture. No prior art history background. Professor is very intelligent, although sometimes hard to understand. Tough grader but very willing to help if you ask for it. Got a bad grade but enjoyed the class enough to take another.

Buddhist art was really interesting. Howard is difficult to understand at first but you get used to it. Some think shes tough because she gives quizzes every week but it really just helps you if you study. Shes pretty approachable and overall just wants students to love buddhist art as much as she does.

Bad professor, her lectures are very unorganized and she is a very harsh grader. She is a big fan of the intermediate grade. She wants you to be very specific but she can't translate the information with clarity. Do not take a course.

Smart woman, bad professor. Too intelligent. She won't tell you till the end probably, but her accent is an Italian one. She is a very harsh grader and expects a lot of her students. Some of the material can be boring but she tries to make it interesting. PS- if she learns your name, she WILL call on you for questions you dont know.

She's a very intelligent woman, enthusiastic about the subject matter she's teaching and still powerful in her field. She's approachable and actually very helpful. She just expects you to study hard, which is not unreasonable in my view. Be a curious person, make some effort, and learn in her class!

Here's the REAL deal. She has an accent and can be hard to understand some times, but WILL clarify herself if needed. Very knowledgeable about the subject matter and is very enthusiastic. One Midterm One Final decides grade. I found her to be a pleasant person. She likes to smile. TONS of memorization, but isn't too hard if you've taken AH-105

One of the worst teachers at Rutgers. It's time for her to retire. She is a cranky mean old lady. She was really hard to understand in class, she was completely unfair with grades and the work load is tremendous. I dropped this course b/c it was more of a headache than it was worth. Do not take this class!
