Professor Hanley is a good teacher, her lectures are well done and easy to understand. The assigned readings are just alright. Challenging but fair teacher. She does sometimes put off a I am better than you vibe which is unfortunate. But none the less worth taking her.

I feel that if I took her for a Latin American history class, I would like her. But I learned more about the sugar cane industry than I did things to prepare me for Hist 495. You know, the whole purpose for the class. She was prompt in responding to emails and was nice during office hours though.

Moderately tough grader. Her lectures are well-conceived and engaging, and she often lightens them with jokes. Her class discussions are not great--she's more interested in knowing that you've read than knowing your thoughts about what you've read. If you work at it, your writing will improve markedly in her class. Hard work will be rewarded.

Great teacher. Two papers and two tests in the class. I had no problem in that class and she is really nice so if you need help you should go and talk to her. One of the best teachers I have had here, those that do bad just don't put any effort in.

Great professor. Those who don't like her don't want to put forth the effort to do the reading. If you read, you'll be golden in her classes. She's a very nice lady and a good teacher. She may seem to grade hard, but you'll learn. Oh and she offers TONS of extra credit papers if you need it.

Boring. Unclear with some assignments--Handed out a quiz study guide which might as well have been written in Chinese. There are better overall history teachers that teach upper-level History classes you can chose. Smart with the subject material doesn't necessarilly mean the best.

If you're on her good side, you'll be fine, but if you make her mad, she'll ignore you or be ****y in class. There's boring reading and a lot of group/class discussions on the reading. She also likes to make comments regarding politics and economics and how dumb students are for not reading the NY Times like she does.

Very hard! Avoid her at all cost. She is very demanding, which is fine, but she is unclear with her demands. The student is left playing a horrible game of trying to figure out what she wants. Not an ejoyable class.

Hard class, yes, but great teacher. If you do the work and show up to lectures then you won't have any problems. It's college -- it your fault if you screw it up, not the professor's.

Expects more than most 491 teachers but the end result is a strong understanding of research and greatly improved writing skills. If you're looking for an easy class, this isn't it. If you're looking for a quality education, she is highly recommended.

Horrible teacher IMO. Her style of teaching is hard to understand, her tests require more than what they should, hard to follow along in class. Watch out for her grading.....she demanded thatI turn a paper back in after she allready graded it. My grade went from a B to an F. Beware

Withdrew from this class. Fair teacher but notes/lectures were hard to follow, also had you print notes and outlines outside of class. Material, at least in 381, was boring. Some movies we watched werent even in English, poor with return emails. Even map quiz areas were defined poorly.
