Comment:

Rubin is extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the subject. Only a midterm and final with 2 papers. Go to class and listen carefully to pass. Every other Friday is a discussion OR online paper. Midterm and final are written essays. Highly recommend her if you like history. Good lecturer and answers all questions. She really knows her stuff

I like Rubin because she is loud. It's almost impossible not to pay attention. Her passion for 19th century American history will help you in the class. No mid-term, but you have to do 8/11 weekly discussion board postings, many of which require you to read a whole 300 page book which is just crazy. Do all of the BB postings to ensure an A

Comment:

I really liked Dr. Rubin and loved her Civil War class. However, her classes are not easy and she expects alot of of the work you turn in. If you are a weak writer or miss alot of classes, you will not do well in her class. I spent 13 hours on an essay that I thought was AWESOME only to get an 89% on it… and I consider myself a very strong writer.

Dr. Rubin grades essays fairly harshly, and do not expect them back quickly. She is very knowledgeable on the Civil War and if you are interested in the subject you should take her course. If writing is not your strong suit, then it might be more difficult.

Dr.Rubin uses books instead of a textbook, which makes the class more interesting. The lectures were sometimes boring, but for the most part were able to hold attention. The problem with this class was the grading. Essays were graded very harshly and even after having comments saying "good analysis" and then the rubric had points lost on analysis.

I had a great semester in this class. Dr. Rubin is unbelievable. Her knowledge is unparalleled as is her personality. She is willing to meet you half way. That is a very important trait in a teacher. If you're into history, you will absolutely love this class!

Dr. Rubin is a good teacher. Her lectures are boring, but her passion about history makes you want to pay attention. Grade consists of a 2 test, and 2 essays which are all easy if you attend class regularly. The TA she had when I took it wasn't very fair in grading and ended up marking down one of my papers because she didnt agree with it.

Her logic didn't seem to make any sense. She said that Disney's, "Song of the South" movie and the Disney themed ride "Splash Mountain", were racially insensitive. Thats ridiculous!!! Far out opinions I would say! Hope you like reading 400 pages per night though!

i took the history of the old south with her and it was so boring. it should have been the history of slavery. thats all she talked about. all the work was easy, but everything was about slavery, not really the south at all. i was disapointed

I thought Rubin was extremely good, I just had her this semester and she explained everything very clearly, I had no problem with her at all, her lectures were interesting, exams weren't too bad, and papers weren't bad either. I'd recomend her, she makes history fun!

Dr. Rubin is a tough teacher. I worked my butt off and got a B. She is very interesting to listen to and her classes go by really fast. She is very nice and approachable and likes to chat with her students. Overall good prof. but she requires A TON of reading... A TON.

Rubin was extremely nice and so easy to talk to. Her class isn't that interesting in itself, but her enthusiasm for her topics definitely helps getting the class interested. Many debates and discussions helped the class stay awake. If you work hard, you'll definitely get that A.

What a GREAT class, and a GREAT prof.! Dr. Rubin is very funny, outgoing, and makes the Civil War fun. She really knows her stuff and isn't afraid to to help. TAKE HER!!! I'm not normally a UMBC student; I go to TU and came to take the class this semsester because of Dr. Rubin!

Excellent teacher! She uses a variety of material inside of class as well as outside of class. I didn't like the books....but over all I gained a new perspective. Good class if you like discussion and a new outlook!
