Merzlak is a really misunderstood teacher.Hes been teaching for ages, so he expects you to bring something new when writer papers. If you're engaged and creative he'll love you.He says some of the funniest, most vulgar things you'd never expect an older man to say.If you get an A on one of his papers it's also seen as great cred for higher courses.

Comment:

Professor Merzlak is tough, but I loved his class. He is extremely clear in what he wants and he will help a student if they need it. Although his essays and tests are difficult, if you attend class, pay attention and work hard, you're golden. I recommend this class and I would take him again for sure, I learned so much!

For a 200 level English class, Professor Merzlak is an incredibly tough grader. He expects you to comprehend every material perfectly, with no room for error. His tests are difficult - he makes you identify, interpret and evaluate too many random passages without an adequate amount of time. I will never take another one of his classes.

Professor Merzlak's intellect can be intimidating but under that bravado he's just a softy. If you struggle, talk to him! He'll do his best to help you and you will learn something interesting along the way. His wealth of knowledge is impressive, take advantage of it!

If you ever have the opportunity to take a course on the English Romantic Poets with him, DO IT! He knows EVERYTHING on the subject. It really becomes a passionate journey, as the Prelude is engrained in the man's soul

I currently have Professor Merzlak for an english lit course. He is easily one of the most intelligent professors ive come across. He has a good sense of humor, speaking poetically one moment and then referring to us as idiots the next! Love it. Covers interesting material and his character keeps the class engaged

he's honestly nothing special. I've had much better professors then him. he doesn't have too much work but make you do pointless things such as passage identifying. sometimes i find him annoying and feel as if he has favorites as if we're 10 years old again. overall, i wouldn't recommended taking his class.

Not a hard class but Prof. Merzlak is very arrogant and obnoxious and worst of all, he plays favorites. He made some funny jokes throughout the semester but for the most part, the class was mind-numbing and I didn't enjoy it at all. There are 3 short papers, a midterm and a final. The work isn't too much, but I wouldn't recommend him at all.

He is very intellignet and a worth while professor to take. You will learn a lot from his class. He is very interested in what he teaches wich is always a good thing. I had my disagreements with him but in the end I liked him and his class. He isn't so much a hard grade as much as he is a proffessor that wants you to write what he wants to read.

Smart, and somewhat arrogant but I don't see why he shouldn't be. This is the only class I have that I don't mind going to and I actually pay attention. 3 short papers, a midterm and a final. I barely prepared for the midterm and got a B+ so he's not hard or unfair. I'll take him again.

Definitely pretentious, but deservedly so - he's a very intelligent professor with extensive background in his subject. If he respects you, he will treat you well, but he doesn't have much patience for unmotivated students. He's very tough but in a way that pushes you to improve. Probably not the professor to take for a gen. ed.
