Although Orgo is hard at Vandy, Hess was a decent professor and a very smart man. Tests gets predictable after your first test. Overall: A nice class and a decent professor. Don't forget to TAKE EXCELLENT NOTES and go over the textbook before each lecture.

He's pretty boring and too mart to be teaching intro orgo, and he knows it! You have to go to class cuz he tests on what he talks about But you have to read the book for background too. If you look at practice tests and memorize the reactions tests aren't too hard/.

Smart and dedicated professor, but lectures were pretty boring and coming to class doesn't really help on the exams. Tests were ok, but very few number of questions each worth a lot of points. Not the best organic professor.

Dr. Hess is a nice guy who is certainly qualified in the field. His lectures can be hard to absorb sometimes, especially if you haven't read the material in advance. Studying on your own outside of class is highly recommended if you want to ace the tests, which are not all that hard. He throws no tricks, the curve is fantastic.

Hess knows what he is talking about if you speak to him personally during office hours. However, during lectures, expect mistakes left and right. On tests, mistakes are common as well - and often keys are completely wrong. Hess is horrible at communcation - have had him ignore 2/3 emails I've sent him. Overall, class is not hard if you study a bit.

Practice exams that he posts are ALWAYS full of errors, which makes it hard to study. Exams are not too hard, but having only 4 exams to determine your grade is not good for people who test poorly. He is available for office hours. Lectures are also plagued by errors, which makes understanding harder. Find a good tutor if you have Hess!

Best orgo teacher. Smart smart man. Never tries to trick you..tests on what he lectures...study notes/do all homework problems...more than what is assigned.

Hess was a great teacher, do not be intimidated...as long as you keep up and do reading before class, his tests are very straight forward and he tests on what he lectures. He is a fair and good organic teacher...also a very smart man.

All of his examples are flawed... frequently makes mistakes on exams... confused himself while teaching... not very helpful outside of class... DOES NOT GIVE PARTIAL CREDIT (OK, he did ONE time). His tests usually have 10 problems on them, so if you don't understand a minor concept and it makes it onto the test, you're f**ked.

Complete a**hole. Doesn't help, is not available for office hours ever, is very arrogant and thinks everyone is beneath him. If he's the only teacher that's teaching orgo at the time, wait and take it over the summer. It's not worth getting yourself all worked up over this class because he is a complete di*k.

he doesnt explain concepts - he states them, you get confused and go home and read the book. no joke, he doesnt even write words on the board so you dont even know how to spell them, let alone define them. hed be so much better if he assumed we were less knowedgable about a subject we havnt finished yet

Great but non-stop lecturer whose exams--unlike the easier but more confusing Lowe--require you to have really mastered the material . Though his fondness for historical asides and his own voice means he often misses raised hands in class, he's always available via AOL to answer questions.
