She's a wonderful woman who cares deeply about her students' education-- at times this means she will slow down the class to make sure the straggling learners understand fully. She is available after class, during class, and gives you her number/email and is prompt in answering. Loves sharing Japanese culture with her students-- field trips.

I'm here to clear up some stuff about Hoshino sensei. She may not be the most organized teacher, but she is insanely invested in her students and not at all ineffective. She wants you to succeed no matter what, but gets sidetracked often by personal anecdotes. Ultimately, I don't think I've ever encountered a more personally pleasant woman.

This really is an easy class. Barbara makes the language easy to understand and is a really fun person. She threw a sushi day and took us all to Mitsuwa, the Japanese neighborhood in Chicago. She is very effective in her teaching style and does not ask too much of the students. The most time that homework takes is half an hour, maybe one hour.

Honestly disregard everything negative you hear about Barbara. She is the kindest older lady I've ever met. She takes you on a trip to a Japanese marketplace and throws a sushi day feast as well. Plays games in class and clarifies what is needed. HW takes up like an hour sometimes, but its not unbearable. Highly recommended.

Always had a plan, she was very helpful. however she was always over planning and wanted to students to learn a little more than the class could teach. and during the final weeks was a real crunch time almost 3 times the work which was quite teh load altogether. though I'll admit fun to be around for a laugh

Extemely ineffective teacher. She favors students who suck up to her and help her teach the class, since she's pretty much incapable of doing it by herself. She does not understand Japanese culture. She will also test you on things not covered in class. Good luck trying to tell her something since she's never ever wrong, even when it's obvious.

I'll admit. She wasn't the best teacher. A bit spacey, but she really wants her students to pass. Not sure if all her classes had a TA, but she needed one. Study sessions with the TA helped out lots. Her final wasn't tough. (Answer basic questions in Japanese.) But her other tests were. Study hard, and practice. You'll pass that way.

This woman's lack of knowledge of the Japanese culture and language is asphxiating. She asks questions then ignores answers. I have ALWAYS excelled at languages with A always, but this class I received a C-. Not ENTIRELY her fault but a good 87% hers.

This woman's inability to to teach is astounding. It permeates the entire classroom and ooozes out into the rest of the tenth floor. She is unclear, disoraginzed and lazy. She is always late and lacks even the slightest clue about what she is doing wrong
